Landcare Projects & Biodiversity
The Southern Otway Landcare Network
vegetation
restoration initiatives improve habitat
for some of
our most important and unique Australian
animals.
SOLN's Landcare projects provide connections
within
the landscape... corridors that promote
biodiversity.
These corridors promote genetic diversity
in our
indigenous flora and fauna, protecting
and creating
habitat for their survival.
Indigenous vegetation corridors also
reduce the stress on whole ecosystems.
Vegetation corridors protect our remnant
vegetation from becoming genetically
isolated, which results in species
decline. We can make a positive contribution
to local wildlife habitat.

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE
Last Sunday was a special day for Judi
Forrester and her family, and those
that were privileged to hear the hand-written
tunes from 1817 Ireland brought to life
by a group of four talented musicians
in the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.
Skilled fiddler and teacher, James Goulding
(Judi's great.great, great grandfather)
from Hammond Marsh, County Cork, Ireland,
wrote his repertoire of some 250 tunes
in 1817, a collection of the popular
tunes from Europe generally. His son,
Thomas brought the manuscript to Australia
in 1845 and Judi's grandfather gave
it to her in 1964.
Arranged by Geoffrey d'Ombrain, he (numerous
instruments!) and Alison Thomson (flute),
Kathryn Govan (oboe) Heather George
(clarinet) performed some 17 tunes from
the manuscript. Including Spanish Bolero,
Spanish Waltz, The Maid of Lode, Molly
My Dear, The Last Rose of Summer, Adieu-A
heart warm for adieu, Hornpipes, The
Rakes of Mallow, My love is like a Red,
Red Rose, Reels, My Lodging is on the
Cold Ground, Perthshire Hunt & Devil's
Dream, Jigs, The Minstrel Boy, Cardan's
Farewell to Music. Geoffrey's ancestors
were Irish and his great grandmother
was born in County Cork. He wonders
if any of the family ever heard James
Goulding play. It was a remarkable concert
on Sunday. Congratulations Judi and
thank you for sharing your treasure.
There will be an opportunity to hear
some of these tunes again here in Apollo
Bay on Sunday 24th June at the Anglican
Church. This time performed by Celtic
harpist, Cath Connelly and fiddler,
Colin O'Donnell. Keep this date free!

Join Colac Otway Shire's Local Laws team and have
your pet identified for life with an ISO microchip.
Council is holding another microchipping and pet
registration day on Saturday, March 3 at the Colac
Hockey Ground, Hearn Street, Colac (enter via
Gravesend Street) from 10am to 1pm.
The microchips will be implanted by local vets at
a
cost of $25 per animal, with Council dog and cat
registrations accepted on the day.
Members from Colac's Dog Obedience will hold
obedience demonstrations.
Council's Local Laws Coordinator Graeme Murphy
said from May 1, 2007, State Government legislation
would require all cats and dogs being registered
for
the first time with a Council to be microchipped.
"Microchipping of new registrations from May
1 is a
requirement under the Domestic Feral and Nuisance
Animals Act and fines do apply if the Act is not
complied with," Mr Murphy said. "Even
if your cat or dog is already registered with
Council, It's a good idea to get them 'chipped'
at this
cheaper rate."
Mr Murphy said Council registration was cheaper
for
microchipped animals. "Registration together
with the implantation of an
approved microchip ensures the owner's contact
details are available to Local Laws staff to enable
the
return of the lost pet," Mr Murphy said.
Pet owners planning to come along to the
Microchipping Day are reminded to secure their dogs
with a lead and keep their cats in a cage to ensure
their safety.

Laws
