A sad ending to a great
old Hall
The Uniting Church Hall burnt down on Sunday
night (14 December) causing a lot of heartache
to the congregation and community. The hall
has a long history and is actually a composite
of two churches moved around Apollo Bay on
bullock wagons. Our understanding is that
the larger hall was the Methodist Church that
had been built in 1886 where the Post Office
was and then moved to Noel Street in 1890
and then in 1936 to a site in Moore St. The
smaller hall was the Skenes Creek Methodist
Church that had been moved to the Methodist
site in Moore St in 1951. Both halls were
moved to the current site in 1958 following
the establishment of the Uniting Church. The
kitchen and other facilities were added later
as was the 'Blue Room' as a community centre
supported by Otway Health.
Apart from being used for a friendly chat
and cuppa after Sunday services, it also was
used by many community groups, including the
Apollo Bay Playgroup who sadly have lost all
their toys. A special fund has been established
at the Apollo Bay & District Community
Bank in town. The SUFM group has been using
the hall for many years over the Christmas
New Year period where they run a very successful
Beach Mission and will now have to find alternative
accommodation. Police are investigation the
cause of the fire

P3
Apollo
Bay P-12 College
would like to congratulate the
VCE class of
2009 for its outstanding results.
It is a just reward for such
a hard working group and the
effort they have put in over
the year.
Whilst celebrating the achievements
of 2008 we are looking forward
to a new era of digital education
in 2009 and beyond. In 2009
all Yrs 5 / 6 / 7 & 10 students
will be provided with a personal
laptop. That is a total of 100
new laptops for our students.
As well as these new machines
the school will maintain 50
desktop machines in class labs.
Our digital learning plan is
for each child from Yr5 to12
to have access to a personal
laptop computer. This will be
fully achieved over the next
2 years as each New Year 10
group is provided with a Lap-Top.
These new machines will ensure
that students attending Apollo
Bay P-12 College will be equipped
to take full advantage of the
digital future. We are also
excited about the formation
of the new Junior High team
that includes Belinda Conning,
Alison Verboon and Chris Hansen
who will be using the new laptops
extensively in the Year 5 &
6 program
2009 will also be an exciting
year for our Yr 9 students who
are also undertaking a new program
in self development and leadership
under the guidance of Darren
Gill. Students will complete
an extensive camps program beginning
in the first week of term 1
with "City Experience"
and will undertake their Duke
of Edinburgh award working with
various community groups.
We would like to especially
thank the parents, volunteers
and the community for their
support over the last 12 months
and look forward to an even
more exciting 2009. Also, our
appreciation goes to Nadia and
Rod from Seaside Coachlines,
McHarry's and all the drivers
for their excellent service.

Last Wednesday the community hosted Dr Peter Miller

Letters
to the Editor

The Editor,
How fortunate we are to have such wonderful warm
and compassionate staff at Laura Pengilley and Otway
Health caring for our elderly. To be part of the
residents lunch at the Apollo Bay Hotel on Sunday
was a pleasure. The staff worked hard to have every
resident present at the function (no mean feat)
and the dedication and caring between the staff
and the residents was lovely to watch. Thanks must
also go to Merrilyn and Charles who "made it
all happen". With much appreciation—the
Lalor family
The Editor,
On Sunday 14th December, Merrilyn and Charles at
the Apollo Bay Hotel gave a wonderful Christmas
dinner for our people in the Nursing Home and the
residents of the Hostel. Each of these people were
accompanied by a carer. This was all for free, the
generosity of these people to the community goes
unnoticed. I would like to say they are the most
generous publicans ever to be in Apollo Bay. Barbara

WE'RE DREAMING OF A GREEN
CHRISTMAS
Christmas traditionally means goodwill, gifts and,
in our society - WASTE, mountains of it Planet Earth
could do without. If you'd like an environmentally
friendly festive season, this year you're not alone.
ORCA's online search for a green Christmas produced
over 500,000 entries! Here are 10 top tips to turn
Christmas green.
1. Send email greetings or phone friends. Australians
send more than 260 million cards each year, causing
such a problem that 14 years ago Planet Ark started
a card recycling campaign. It's still going. Until
January 31st you can return cards for recycling
in a reply paid envelope from Australia Post.
2. Instead of buying a cut tree, buy one in a pot,
or move one you have inside.
3. Choose food that's seasonal and local, and drink
that hasn't travelled round the world.
4. Say no to wrapping - the instant throwaway! adapt
gift boxes, use old calendars, boutique bags, bits
of old fabric etc; and, for the kids, hide presents
and organise a treasure hunt.
5. Buy fewer things - one gift for every family
member from everyone.
Give from your own store of cherished things. Turn
garden produce into gifts
Knit a beanie, embroider a cot blanket, craft a
coffee
table (well, perhaps for next year). Make a gift
of your
time - eg. accompany an older family member on a
visit or holiday
16. Buy recycled or preloved goods from garage sales,
op shops and your handy antique dealer.
7. Buy toys and other items that use only rechargeable
batteries
Batteries contain toxic chemicals and don't biodegrade
- and about 40% of battery sales occur at this time
of year.
8. Give services or experiences - a massage voucher,
concert ticket or hobby course
9. Include gifts for needy others (Oxfam, World
Vision, Greenpeace etc sell a range of goods - and
don't forget the animals)
10. Finally, connect with nature. Enjoy this beautiful
irreplaceable gift we share by taking a beach or
forest walk on Christmas day. Take your binoculars
and initiate an annual family bird count. Or simply
reflect on life's great meaning, its fragility and
resilience.
Season's greetings to all from ORCA! |
