received as our masthead over the last few weeks.
This weeks design is by Wil Eyers. Thanks Wil.
The competition closed on Tuesday October 30th at
5pm. First Prize to the value of $100 will be awarded to the
best design received.
The Apollo Bay News will seek comments from our readers
on the best masthead received, but our workers will decide

Letters to the Editor
Chief Executive Officer,
COLAC OTWAY SHIRE 9 December, 2007

Dear Madam,
Subject: SEALING THE SURFACE OF THE BARHAM RIVER ROAD
(Petition from local residents, tourist services
providers and visiting tourists) Further to my letter dated 8 July 07 and your response dated 27 July 07, I have been discussing the content of your response with local residents and service providers in the tourist industry. The general feeling is that maintenance and capital works, conducted by the Shire bring temporary relief, but conditions deteriorate swiftly thereafter along the unsealed 4km of the Barham River Road. It is appreciated that sealing the rest of the road may be costly but it is believed to produce overall savings in the long run.
Commercial considerations aside, the unsealed portion of the road is dangerous. I happen to live in a location where I observe many tourists just turning around at the end of the bitumen. Local residents and service providers felt that the urgency of the problem needs to be elevated with the Shire and State Government, and decided to petition the Shire in the first instance. 123 signatures have been volunteered, and these are attached for your information. A copy of this correspondence has been forwarded to our local member in the Victorian State Government, Mr.Terry Mulder.
Yours faithfully, Valerie Stahn.

CORRECTION TO LETTER FROM VAL FLITTON.

The last part of the letter should have read:
After the Road was completed, Mr. and Mrs. Mercer
with their two sons, Alf and Brian, set up home at Grey
River. Hardship struck again during the 1939 bushfires,
they were burnt out and lost everything. They moved to
Apollo Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack O'Malley moved into Apollo Bay
where Jack worked as a linesman for the P.M.G. They
then moved to Birregurra where Nancy was born.

N MEMORIAM
ALF GRAY 18/12/2006
It has been one long lonely year since we lost you, Precious Alfie. How I miss your all-encircling love, support and laughter. Always Margaret We miss you so much father and treasure the wonderful memories we share. Fiona, Mark, Adam, Antony, Deb & Lynne. Grand-children Bhey, Rhys, Dayn, Aaron, Blake and Marshal

Dear Editor,
The Community Memorial Service, held last Sunday, was a most worthwhile and meaningful
experience. I am sure that all who attended
would have found some comfort from the words
which were expressed by various members of
our community. In particular we would like to
thank Banyalla for their music which was
sensitive to the occasion. And also to Otway
Health for organizing the service.

The Wind

Tripping, slipping, hurrying by Through long grass, under a cloudy sky Through leaves on trees With hardly a sound
It stirs the dust upon the ground. You hear it when it comes
Or when something it catches, near by It's a zephyr, a gentle breeze A gale, or a howling wind on high Which ever way you hear it What ever form it's in From hurricanes and tornadoes It is the name it always goes by The Wind
