Apollo Bay News had Its 30 birthday
on 19 January
Our first edition was on 19th January 1979, when
the Apollo Bay News Sheet was first presented
to the community of Apollo Bay as a double-sided
foolscap page produced by volunteers.
This was brought about by a group of people interested
in providing the local community with a means
of submitting news, views and opinions through
this medium, on a weekly basis. I have listed

Apollo Bay News is one of only three community
papers printed on a weekly basis in Victoria.
152 people have helped produce Apollo Bay
News over the years, and many members of
our community have contributed articles,
and supported us through donations, paid
advertisements or sales venues. Colac Otway
Shire provides our office at minimal cost.
250 copies were printed each week in 1983;
this is now about 850. Amazing really with
a permanent population of only about 1000
people!
We believe that the Apollo Bay News is an
important part of our community, and that
communication between the people of Apollo
Bay benefits from all individuals and groups
contributing their news, needs and concerns.
Keep up the good work - and Happy 30th Birthday
to us! (We plan to have our celebration
on Saturday May 2nd)

Colac Relay for Life
Call for Teams
Colac's Relay for Life may have to
reschedule to later in 2009 if current
team numbers do not improve in the
coming two weeks.
The Colac Relay for Life 2009 organising
committee is calling on the community
of Colac and district to register
a team in this local community event,
which is scheduled to take place at
Central Reserve on February 28 and
March 2nd, 2009.
The number of registered teams has
not achieved hoped for levels at this
stage of the planning for the 2009
Relay. The Colac Relay for Life Organizing
Committee is calling for all intending
to register a team to do so NOW, as
so the planned Relay can take place.
The Colac Committee's focus is to
have fun and support friends and families
who have been affected with cancer
in their lives. "Relay for Life
is an extraordinary event and I would
encourage friends and families living
in Colac region to get a team together,"
said Colac Relay for Life's Co-Chairmanager,
Kirsty Foley-Neave. "There is
plenty of fund to be had with everyone
camping out overnight in a festive
style atmospheres".
So come on Apollo Bay Residents get
your friends together and form a team
for this very worthy event.

The Barham River
Festival
The Otway Barham Catchment Landcare Group,
in conjunction with its Otway Barham Catchment
Reference Group partners- Barwon Water,
Corangamite Catchment Management Authority,
Parks Victoria, Colac Otway Shire and the
Southern Otway Landcare Network, invites
and welcomes the community of Apollo Bay
and visitors to :
The Barham River Festival 28th February
10.00am to 5.00pm
Venue: Great Ocean Road Wines Events Centre
celebrating the natural beauty of the Barham
river
and its catchment from source to sea
just 3 kms along the Barham River Road within
the
Otway Barham Catchment.
Free entry!
This event is also a celebration of the
journey that has been taken over the past
three years by landholders and our partner
agencies to shape a Special Water Supply
Catchment that takes into account the needs
of the landholders and residents in the
catchment, the community of Apolio Bay and
our visitors with the need for high quality
water and the natural community of our catchment-
our flora and fauna- all depend on the Barham
River system for their survival.
Together we have developed the Otway Barham
Catchment Management Framework and established
objectives and targets that have focused
on protecting the catchment's assets and
reducing the significant threats "from
source to sea"- Members of the Otway
Barham Catchment Landcare Group in turn
have developed a Five Year Strategic Plan
that has been linked to this Management
Framework. Landholders have been assisted
to undertake a broad range of projects on
their properties which have worked towards
repairing riparian areas, fencing the river-both
east and west arms of the Barham River,
fencing gullies, adopting environmental
best practice property management- many
of these property projects have been connected
together. Our success is determined by the
health of the Barham River. We would like
to bring what has been achieved to our community.
The Barham River Festival aims to showcase
the achievements within the Otway Barham
Catchment, create an awareness within the
community of Apollo Bay the need to maintain
a healthy river system to provide our town
with high quality water, provide opportunities
for the community to experience the catchment
environment, promote the conservation of
our natural resources both in the home and
on the land including water and energy efficiency
and to promote the power of community- what
can be achieved when we work together and
shape outcomes through the diversity of
our opinions and experiences.
The Festival will include opportunities
for people of all ages to be involved- our
own health is very much influenced by our
connectedness to our environment. We will
have a broad range of displays, a speaker
program across a range of topics, interactive
activities, stalls focusing on local produce
and production, music, art, food
and family showbags. In two weeks all residents
in Apollo Bay will receive their own copy
of the program as a householder. We will
keep you in touch!
Yes it is true- one of our guest presenters
is Vasili Kanidiadis- host of Vasili's Garden
on Channel 31. Vasili is a bug vigilante
of the organic kind always thinking up new
ways to win the pest war using natural ingredients!

News
I thought this was an interesting
article from Kathy Walker, a
renowned Melbourne-based Educational
Consultant. Kathy conducts sessions
for all Early Childhood and
Primary Educators as well as
government agencies.
A New School Year: What Is Success?
The school term is about to
start. Families are organising
uniforms, books and school bags
and buying the almost mandatory
new pair of school shoes. Often
the practical aspects of the
New Year dominate our thoughts.
It has been occurring to me
that starting school, particularly
for the first time, but in any
year level, is an opportunity
to reflect upon what we want
most for our children. Often
we say, "I want them to
be successful." Unfortunately,
success is increasingly being
equated to benchmark and numerical
scores. Most importantly, it
is about happiness, a strong
sense of identity and pride
in oneself. Being able to form
meaningful relationships, a
sense of belonging and contribution.
A sense within oneself that
you can dream, hope and aspire.
As the new school term starts,
I am committed to reminding
all members of the community,
parents, teachers, government
and policy makers, that a child's
worth and successful education
is not simply about reading
levels or a benchmark."
Interviews Reminder....
Interviews will be held for
the Preschool Group only
next Wednesday the 4th of February.
I look forward to
meeting all of my new familes
and children for
Preschool next week!
PS: To all my Preschool Angels
who take the step into
Prep next week. Goodluck and
have FUN! Will be
thinking of you xx
PPS: "Earth calling Helene,
nearly time to pull yourself
out of the garden"!
Kindest Regards, Kate Hedrick-Wagstaff

Hooded Plover Nesting
at Skenes Creek
On 1st December, 2008 local
Water Watch and Estuary Watch
volunteers noticed a pair of
Hooded Plovers nesting on the
sand near the water's edge on
the east side of Skenes Creek.
This was an exciting discovery
as it has been many years since
this endangered species had
chosen to nest at Skenes Creek.
Prompt action from the Water
Watch volunteers and Apollo
Bay & Kennett River Public
Reserves Committee of Management
staff saw the site roped off
and interpretative signage erected
asking beachgoers to place dogs
on leads and avoid encroachment
into and disturbance of the
site.
Excitement turned to concern
about the close proximity to
the waters edge of the nest
which contained 3 eggs.
Heavy rain the night of 5th
December saw the worst fears
of those monitoring the site
realised, as mid morning on
the 6th December the nest washed
away with an approximate 30cm
rise in the level of Skenes
Creek. The site remains roped
off and the signage in place
as it is hoped that the parent
birds may return to nest there
again, either later this season
or next. Apollo Bay Wildlife

Apollo
Bay Music Festival |
27th-
29th MARCH 2009 Songs & Voices of the Otways
Since the beginning of the year the festival has
been working on the 'Songs & Voices Of the Otways'
workshop series supported by Festivals Australia.
The first series of workshops in songwriting, storytelling
and writing for comedy were extremely well received
- and songs are being written within the community
as we speak - Nick Barker proved to be quite'inspirational.
The festival will be contacting all workshop participants
for follow up sessions, and a new series of workshops
with International Song Writers Boo Hewerdine and
Kim Richey leading up to the festival. Further workshop
dates will be announced within a fortnight.
Kim Richey to perform at Apollo Bay Music
Festival!
Kim Richey is best known to some as a highly acclaimed
songwriter. Her songs have been recorded by Trisha
Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless,
Felicity Urquhart, James Morrison and many others.
In addition to two Grammy nominations Kim's songs
have appeared on television in Angel, Buffy the
Vampire Slayer, Grey's Anatomy, and Alias to name
a few. Where she truly shines though is in the recording
of her own material. "Glimmer", her third
album was listed as one of the years 10 best in
Time magazine. In 2008 she released her fifth album,
"Chinese Boxes", produced by Giles Martin,
to high praise.
"Kim Richey's vocals are haunting, memorable,
and ineffably beautiful. All of her innate gifts
as-a true music artist - poetic lyric-writing ,
communicative ability to breathe life into any song,
and above all, her glorious inimitable voice - are
enshrined in this album."
Kim Richey "...would rule the charts in a land
where Marshall Crenshaw was king, Aimee Mann queen,
and the The Beatles never put out another record
after revolver".
And with such a strong lineup already announced
I think you'll agree 'this is' the icing on the
cake! Anton Tibbits. Hon Sec, ABMF Inc |

Letters
to the Editor

The Editor,

really appreciate this idea and to Leslie, a big
thanks
for pointing out the cheapest and best buys in the
shop.

Dear Editor,
I would like to personally thank some of the wonderful
people of our town. For quite a few years now I
have been making and donating jams, pickles etc
to the Op Shop. People have donated some of the
fruit, vegetables etc. Most fruits can be used in
jams but not peaches and nectarines. I have advertised
each year for pomegranites but to no avail. This
fruit makes a beautiful jam.
In the past couple of months I have had sugar donated
to me and I would like to personally thank those
people. So thank you for the wonderful gesture.
I will not print your name as you know who you are
and this will save you the embarrassment of having
your name put in print.
Last year i made a staggering number of jams, 1198
jars, this amounts to approximately $4,300 to the
Op Shop total that we give to OHCS. This year we
are off to a good start as so far for this year
I have made a staggering 246 jars since the 2nd
of January. To those who have donated fruit and
vegetables a Big Thank You. Also is there any one
who has tomatoes that are still green but bushes
are getting too heavy to support. I would love some
green tomatoes to make some pickles. These can be
left at the Op Shop for me to collect.
Please accept my heartfelt thanks to everyone and
I may be the biggest wheel in this, but little wheels
will keep it going. Thanks, Victoria Leorke |
