TRAINING
FOR COMMUNITY RADIO IN APOLLO BAY
Simple training courses are being developed for
anyone from Apollo Bay or the surrounding districts
with an interest in presenting programs for broadcast
across the region and into The Bay.
Sporting clubs and community groups in particular
are invited to consider a regular on-air presence
to communicate with existing and future members
and the local community in general.
If you think local community radio could be great
for your club, group or association, please telephone
contact Bob Knowles on 5237 7223, or 0411 592 681
or e-mail bob@creativemuscle.com.au for more information.
More generally, thanks to a very generous donation
from Tim Congram from Mitre 10, the new aerial to
get the signal into The Bay from Wyelangta is ready
and should be erected (Thanks to Bernie Noy) by
the 3rd week of February. This will mean that Otway
FM will be heard at least into Marengo. From there,
we will need community support (in cash and kind)
to boost the signal across the town and up to Skenes
Creek etc. We are also looking for a suitable caravan
or transportable building to park behind The Bluebird
as the first home of our Apollo Bay studio. Otway
FM -YOU ARE US!
RED CROSS - Apollo Bay Unit

for Red Cross Calling. If you can help please ring

Sustainable Development Group
for Apollo Bay
Following the success of a Public Rally
in Apollo Bay on Saturday Jan.27th, local
residents are to set up a Sustainable Development
Group. In spite of inclement weather, up
to 300 people attended the rally on the
foreshore. Speakers outlined the status
of three major projects, each with their
particular difficulties and at various stages
of progression in the planning process.
Rally organisers stressed that they were
not against development, but sustainability
was the issue. For example, the Western
Coastal Board, has clearly expressed the
view that the Great Ocean Green Project
is not sustainable. (The crowd was reminded
that this project involved 500+ homes to
be built on a flood plain, an 18 hole golf
course and a Hotel/resort style accommodation
facility.) It is reasonable to ask "What
is sustainable development?" While
there is not a single answer to this question
it was put to the gathering that sustainable
development is development that is adequate
to support, uphold and provide for the needs
of the community without depleting resources.
The scale of growth proposed in several
projects is unsustainable when measured
against our resources and current and potential
infrastructure. Guest Speaker at the rally
was Mr Dirk Verwoerk, a Civil Engineer with
wide experience in water engineering projects
both in Australia and overseas. Dirk explained
that, with reference to the 500,000 cubic
metres of fill required to lift the houses
off the flood plain for the GOG Project,
sourcing the material with a haul distance
of more than a few kilometres would be uneconomic,
thus requiring a massive quarry close to
Apollo Bay. Tim Godfrey pointed out that
the Barham River and estuary is Apollo Bay's
greatest asset. "The backwater is the
largest abandoned tidal meander of any stream
in Victoria. It's development should be
for the benefit of the whole community with
sustainable nature based tourism",
explained Tim. Cr Stuart Hart asked how
many ratepayers were present and a sea of
hands indicated a majority by far. He went
on to say that, with regard to the GOG project,
when the flood damage comes, the ratepayers
would have to pick up the bill. A preliminary
copy of the Harbour Precinct Master Plan
was on display with many people saying,
"This is a joke, right?" The excesses
of the plan had caught their eye with 228
mooring berths, and a 70 bed 5 star hotel.
"This is not the Sunshine Coast",
was a regular comment.
$340 was collected from the gathering to
meet the expenses incurred by the organisers.
These included 200 red balloons with "Stop
Great Ocean Greed" printed on them
and a contribution to the band 'Spyndrift',
who entertained the good humoured crowd,
although a brief shower just as we were
getting away turned some people away. A
pamphlet on Sustainable Development was
distributed to the crowd. The community
will be advised as we formalise our group.

Colac Otway
Naturally Progressive
Top Flight Pianist Is Coming To Colac
Top-flight pianist and performer Simon
Gallaher has
fond memories of Colac, it's one of
the first towns he
played when his star began to rise.
As a teenager Simon became the darling
of daytime TV and playing in Colac is
one of his earliest recollections of
life on the road. "It would have
been in 1979 or 1980, it was one of
my first tours and Colac has really
stuck in my memory," said Simon
who is returning to COPACC on Tuesday,
February 6, as part of the Echo 2007
Morning Music series. Simon, who played
COPACC with Julie Anthony in 2005, said
he has thoroughly enjoyed his return
to the stage and is looking forward
to the freedom of playing solo. "I
wasn't going to perform any more and
it was Julie Anthony who said: 'Come
on, let's give it a go'," Simon
said. "We've been having such a
good time, I've become a lot more show-fit,
and so I'm back in the saddle as it
were." Simon said touring solo
meant he could indulge his passion for
a broad range of works by world renowned
composers and famous piano men - ranging
from Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving
Berlin to Billy Joel, Elton John and
Neil Sedaka. "I'm getting very
itchy thinking about what I'd like to
play in Colac - I'm very keen on exploring
the music by Richard Rodgers,"
Simon said. "He gets a bit lost
because of the success of Rodgers &
Hammerstein, but he had an entire career
before he worked with Hammerstein and
I'm very keen to explore his work because
he had a most incredible anthology of
music." Simon said he was also
looking forward to performing some of
his own songs in the first Morning Music
programme for 2007.
The show begins at 11am and tickets
can be booked
at the box office on 5232 2077. |

ABP12C Porents & Friends Group
The summer holidays have disappeared; perfect
warm weather, swimming & surfing, Vicswim,
Nippers, fish & chips, lazy days, catching
up with family and friends, trips out of
town, work and pleasure... We live in a
very busy, beautiful place...
Welcome all to a new year of school, for
some with Prep children it will be their
first day of school for others their last
year, how quickly it goes. Education Department:
www.eduweb.vic.gov.au Involvement in schools
by parents and carers helps children achieve
the best possible learning outcomes. You
can participate in school life, both formally
and informally, through school councils,
parent groups, volunteering and staying
up to date with news about what is happening
in education. Victorian government schools
have volunteer programs where parents can
directly participate in school activities.
Opportunities are available for parents
who wish to volunteer, helping in school
activities like: canteen, excursion and
school events, assistance with reading and
mathematics programs. The school council
comprises parents, the principal, staff
and sometimes community members. It assists
in setting the educational policy of a school.
Councils have between six and 15 members.
You don't need any particular qualifications
or experience - schools look for enthusiastic
parents who want to help improve the learning
outcomes for all students. Elections must
be completed by the end of March. All parents
or guardians of students enrolled at the
school are eligible to vote.
Our school has a parents & friends group.
Are you seeking an active role in the school?
The parents group provide input into school
decision-making, and in partnership with
school council, organise social, educational
and fundraising activities.

APOLLO BAY MUSIC FESTIVAL
APRIL 20-22, 2007 Music festival tickets are on
sale from today. Locals can purchase tickets at
the festival office in Nelson Street between 9.00
and 1.00 Monday to Friday. Earlybird prices apply
through February to March 1.
Last Sunday, January 28, some 30 Friends of the
Festival met in a forum to prepare for another
fabulous event. Each year the bill gets better
and better. This year the music selection committee
has consciously tried to maintain the mix that
appeals to the young but increase the number of
acts attractive to an older audience. The theme
for this year's festival is heritage, in tribute
to the 75th anniversary of the construction of
the Great Ocean Road through to Apollo Bay. As
part of the celebrations vintage cars will join
the opening parade on Friday night, April 20.
The festival has 200 friends registered but is
always happy to have more helpers. If you want
to add to the success of the festival by offering
your help, please contact Jemma Rosevear by phone
on 0409 541 248 or you can email her at jemma_rosevear@hotrnail.corn.
Alternatively you can leave a message for Jemma
atthe festival office on 5237 6761.

"AMENDMENT
C17 - MARRINERS VUE"
Although my principal place of residence is
Wangaratta, I
have owned a beach house since 1960 and watched
grazing land developed into residential lots.
I write to give my support to the two letters published
in
your newsletter from Messrs R Leigh and W H
Simpson
in regard to the above Amendment. The time has come
for the Colac Otway Shire { COS} to wake up and
follow the recommendation of the independent panel
and abandon Ammendment C17. Now and forever.
The Apollo Bay Structual plan states there is any
amount of residential land still available within
the town
boundary as well as in the Skenes Creek and Marengo
area to meet demandfor the next 10 years.
Why then do they want to extend the town boundary?
"Marriners Vue" is not within the town's
boundary and
any thoughts of extending the boundary to include
this
proposed sub-division should be forgotten.
I personally feel the COS has only one course of
action
they can take and abandon the C17 Amendment.
Yours Faithfully,
Norman A Mills. |

COPACC To Launch First Ever Comedy Season
Colac Otway Performing Arts Centre is launching
its
first ever Comedy Season with two of the international
stand-up scene's hottest acts destined for Colac
in a
laughter-packed 2007.
Stand-up Aussie sensation Akmal is first cab off
the
rank in the MixxFM Comedy Season on Saturday,
February 24.
He will be followed by Geordie comedian Ross Noble,
with his new award-winning Fizzy Logic show in May,
just days ahead of the 2007 Melbourne International
Comedy Festival Roadshow.
The Season will conclude in October with The Pitch,
a
funny play which is opening at The Malthouse in
Melbourne in April and will tour to the Edinburgh
Festival and Ireland before landing back at COPACC.
COPACC manager Karen Patterson said the Comedy
Season was planned after Carl Barron's show at
COPACC last year sold out in just a few days.
"It was great to see so many young people,
mostly 25
and under, who were so up for a laugh and wanted
to
know when we were having our next comedy gig,"
Ms
Patterson said.
"We're committed to programming as many different
art forms as possible at COPACC and comedy is
enjoying such a popular renaissance around the world;
we thought it was time we had our own comedy
season."
The Comedy Season has had good community
corporate support with MixxFM sponsoring the season,
ANZ Colac sponsoring the Comedy Festival
Roadshow and Otway Estate sponsoring The Pitch.
