Letters
To the Editor
|
Dear Parents,
Teachers at Apollo Bay P 12 College were not
at work on Wednesday November 21 and it is
important that you know exactly why we reluctantly
decided to take this action. We understand
that strike action presents difficulties for
some parents. However, the fact is that when
it comes to investing in education, Victoria
is currently at the bottom of the class. We
have the lowest spending per student on education
and our most experienced teachers are the
lowest paid in Australia. The highest pay
for a classroom teacher is over $7000 less
than in NSW and well short of the rate paid
to other professionals. Low pay rates and
rising workloads are contributing directly
to shortages of teachers which are now a problem
for many schools across the state.
Almost one in five teachers is employed on
contract. These teachers have no security
and are leaving our schools to seek more permanent
employment. We have a national teacher shortage
and already Queensland, NSW and WA are recruiting
our teachers offering higher pay and secure
employment. Our class sizes are often still
too high.
The Australian Education Union is trying to
do something about these problems in our new
Certified Agreement with the State Government.
Unfortunately we have been negotiating for
nine months without success. The State Government
refuses to invest the money that would allow
us to recruit and retain the best teachers
and reduce class sizes. We feel that there
was no alternative but to take action last
Wednesday. If you would like more information
or want to be kept up to date about the campaign
please visit www.aeuvic.asn.au/campaigns/
support professional pay/ AEU Sub-branch at
Apollo Bay P 12 College. Dear
Editor,
While the flood event of the Barham River
on Sunday Nov 4 was well observed and reported,
many in the Community may not know of a serious
consequence of that flooding. Storm water
flows were such that Barwon Water's Sewage
Treatment plant was unable to cope with the
inflow. The result was that untreated sewage
escaped into outfalls and some commercial
and private properties were flooded. The end
result was that certainly some pollution ended
up in our bay. The storm water system of Apollo
Bay was probably installed more than forty
or fifty years ago when it was a very different
place. What plans are afoot to upgrade our
infrastructure to cope with development proposals?
Perhaps more importantly, who is going to
pay for it? John Spencer, Apollo Bay .
