Macroinvertebrates Survey at Paradise
Thanks to all who took part in our
Waterwatch workshops and a reminder
to all our testers that its time to
do a macroinvertebrate survey again,
and I will be looking to GPS all sites
and make appointments for shadow monitoring
for those that have not yet had the
pleasure of Brenda's visit.
Weedbusters
Weedbuster Week has turned into Weedbuster
Month!
So let's look at this week's environmental
weed...
Wandering Jew- Tradescantia
albiflora
Wandering Jew is a noxious weed in
Australia and is becoming a nightmare
for many landholders in the Southern
Otways, particularly those with waterways
traversing their properties. Wandering
Jew forms dense mats which smother
all native groundcover vegetation
and prevent regeneration of trees
and shrubs. This can have important
long term consequences on streambanks,
where the eventual loss of native
tree and shrub cover could lead to
erosion. Wandering Jew is a creeping,
rapid-growing soft herbaceous plant
from South America, favouring damp,
shady nutrient-enriched areas. Its
leaves are shiny mid-green and eliptical
with a point, and its flowers are
white, about 1 cm across, with a tuft
of protruding yellow-tipped stamens.
Wandering Jew is spread by broken
off sections of stem taking root.
Sections of stem can be washed down
waterways, dumped from gardens wastes
or spread in mud from vehicles. Small
infestations can be dug out, but every
fragment of stem can potentially re-grow
and needs to be removed and burnt
or placed in a heavy-duty plastic
bag and seal. Spraying with herbicides
will work eventually, but repeat treatments
of regrowth will be needed. In sunny
situations, covering the plant with
plastic sheeting for 6 weeks in the
warmer months will weaken the plant.
The use of harmful herbicides should
be avoided if treating infestations
along waterways. It will also be necessary
to re-vegetate riverbanks with native
vegetation after treatment, to prevent
erosion.

Comedy About Swearing
Without Swearing
UK funny man Mark Butler tries not to swear
on stage,
so you might ask why is he doing a comedy
show
about swearing? Amused by the uproar in
the UK over the Australian Tourist Commission's
Where the Bloody Hell Are You? advertising
campaign, Mark created an online survey
to find out if Australian attitudes towards
swearing differ from those of British people.
Butler, who is bringing the results to COPACC
on Wednesday, November 7, said almost 10,000
people responded. Due to a foolish, and
possibly fictitious, promise made to his
grandmother, Butler must share his findings
without technically swearing. How does he
do it, you might ask? He gets the audience
to swear on his
behalf. "This is a sit-down comedy
show about life in the
modern world with clever jokes, stupid experiments
and an electrocution machine," Butler
comments
matter-of-factly. "Topics covered include
the use of bad language, the increase in
global paranoia, the rise of vanity, and
the history of words like bastard."
Butler is known on the comedy circuit for
his devastating wit and his inventive and
distinctive style. Reviewers have described
the show as "a piece of comic mastery,"
"very clever and seriously hilarious".
Butler will be supported at COPACC by Tim
Cove.
Tickets are available at the Box Office
by calling 5232 2077.
Friends of Otway National Park
Marengo Conservation Reserve
Plant ID and Weed Pull Day
We had a great turn out of Friends, some
old and some new, with over 22 people turning
up. We started by walking from Ferrier Drive
through to Telford Street and found a large
number of plants in flower. Then we moved
into the block below Telford Street and
began to pull out the Sweet Pittosporum.
It has been introduced from East Gippsland
and is rapidly changing the plant community
in the reserve. The kids had a great time
pulling out this weed and piling it up into
heaps. Eija Tibbits and Judi Forester found
some new plants not recorded before in the
reserve. They were:
Bushy Club Moss Lycopodium deuterodensum
Necklace fern Asplenium flabellifolium
Small Pale firass Lilly Caesiaparviflora
var minor
Everyone seemed to have fun and a large
amount of pittosporum was removed. It also
goes to highlight the invasiveness of the
weed once it gets going. We finished up
with a well deserved cup of tea and lunch.
Pictured below are some of the keen team
at work.

PERMACULTURE NEWS Free public talk
by DAVID HOLMGREN Mechanic's Hall,
Great Ocean Road, Apollo Day Friday 26th October
- 7pm for a 7.30pm start
David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator
of the permaculture concept - a design system
based on ecological principles enabling people
to establish productive environments providing
food, shelter, material and non-material needs,
as well as the social and economic infrastructures
which support them. Since this collaboration
in 1978, David has written several books,
developed three properties using permaculture
principles and conducted workshops and courses
in Europe, North America and throughout the
Pacific. Having just returned from a 6-month
international tour, David and his partner
Su Dennett are coming to Apollo Bay to run
a weekend workshop in advanced permaculture
principles. Otways & Coast Permaculture
Group is funding a public presentation by
David; the focus of this talk will be the
challenges faced by rural communities with
regard to reliance on fossil fuel energy,
as both an environmental concern and dwindling
non-renewable resource. Given the inherently
holistic nature of permaculture design and
principles, sustainable development in the
true sense will be the subject of the night.
It will be a stimulating, practical and positive
evening, with opportunity for questions and
discussion. more into: tony 52376926 fern

21st BIRTHDAY CHEERS
TO JODIE ROBERTS
On the 28th October 1986 a baby girl was
born, she was perfect until she cried, it
was like a fog horn.
As she grew from a giggly girl into a young
lady, it seemed a long time ago she was
that beautiful baby.
So much she has achieved in her 21 years,
from netball, swimming, tennis, to drinking
beers.
Sometimes we wonder if she thinks before
she says,
revealing her very strange and quirky ways.
Worked in the pub then been to Tassie and
back,
Now at Uni in Geelong learning some tack.
Lots of stories and tales to tell, but most
are bad,
we wouldn't want her to get grief from mum
and dad,
we send her all our love and wishes for
this day.
To Jodie , no more stories only 1 thing
left to say,
Happy 21st and have a wonderful day.
Hugs and kisses to you Marc, Linda, Morgan

Letters
to the Editor

To the Editor,
Could you please tell me how it is that most Ratepayers,
have to pay every time they take rubbish to the
Tip in Apollo Bay!
Last Sunday the 21st of October, we were waiting
for the gentleman, to tell us how much for our load
of Rubbish. In drives a white van, gave the worker
a toot and a wave, unloaded his rubbish, then gave
another toot and wave as he left. How come he didn't
have to gay. He is a local business man here! I'm
concerned about this, as I'm a pensioner and still
have to pay. I'm upset at this as if one business
can get away with not paying how many more don't
have to pay to get rid of their rubbish. Worker
didn't even check the van to see what he had. I
know that it wasn't all recyclable . F. Hartnett
We are circulating a petition in shops in Apollo
Bay that says: We Colac Otway Shire ratepayers think
the decision to build hundreds of units on the Barham
River flood plain is such bad planning that we refuse
to pay our rates and pledge to pay an equivalent
amount of money to the Bendigo Bank in trust until
such time as the Shire reviews the decision. Yvonne
Francis
Letter to the Editor:
Open Letter to Colac Otway Shire Council Compulsory
Tourism Memberships Have you had an opportunity
to discuss my letter of the 11th September 2007,
regarding tourism levied ratepayers having the right
to display their business brochures in the Visitor
Information Centres without the need to belong to
Geelong Otway Tourism? I appreciated your CEO's
response to my email on the 4th September and have
since read her views as expressed in the newspapers.
However, I am concerned that Council is involved
in an illegal 5 party local government cartel, designed
to monopolise the marketing of tourism and compulsory
aquiring members and their fees for the GOT cartel
under the direction of Geelong Otway Tourism. Council
has introduced a tourism levy for the specific purpose
of funding the services provided by the Colac and
Apollo Bay Visitor Information Centres and your
CEO has stated "if you wish to specifically
advertise your business at the VIC's you must be
a member of Geelong Otway Tourism". Does council
have a written policy expressing this opinion and
if so could I please have a copy? Does council have
the right to refuse council services to ratepayers
who do not belong to GOT and the Chamber of Commerce?
Whether GOT is of benefit to our business is not
the point and it's certainly not the business of
Council. Membership to GOT and it's associates should
be market driven. If the tourism industry appreciates
their contribution they will get members, if not,
they will fail. There should be no compulsion by
Council to force membership into such organisations.
Australian businesses succeed through "free
enterprise" not monopolies or secret cartels
which stunt creativity and business growth. Councillors
should be aware that under the leadership and direction
of GOT the number of visitors to the Apollo Bay
Visitor Information Centre during peak periods (Jan-April)
has declined by 6% over the past 7 years (2000-2007).
Further to this fact GOT has not conducted a successful
off peak marketing program over the past 7 years
to close the visitors gaps between peak and off
peak periods. Instead the town experiences a 55%
decline in business during off peak periods which
is not good for the sustainability of Apollo Bay.
Councillors, I respectfully ask that you seriously
consider my concerns.
It should not be compulsory to join GOT to gain
ratepayer funded services within our Shire I look
forward to your response. Peter Lalor Great Ocean

Sing-Along Pays Homage To Danny Kaye
A Tribute to Danny Kaye, created as a rollicking
sing-along, laugh-a-minute riot for young and old
is coming to COPACC on Thursday, November 1. Due
to popular demand there will be an 11 am and 8pm
performance starring world-renowned improvisation
specialist Russell Fletcher whose performance as
the indomitable Danny Kaye won him Best Comedy at
the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2005. Audiences of
all ages loved Danny Kaye's movies, the characters
from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the songs
from Hans Christian Andersen, or the Vessel with
the Pestle routine from The Court Jester. Gracing
the silver screen and treading the boards with a
face made for television, Kaye's quick wit, skilled
buffoonery, masterful tongue twisters, extensive
accents, smooth voice and an incredible repertoire
of characters established him as a showbiz maverick
and family favourite around the world. Russell Fletcher's
dynamic performance and deep understanding of Kaye's
complex personality ensure that this strong theatrical
production is more than just a tribute show.
Although shamelessly nostalgic in places, audiences
are delivered more than a re-run of Danny Kaye highlights.
The show explores his difficult personality, his
struggle for recognition, the suppression of his
roots and his mysterious disappearance from the
comedy radar. Tickets are available at the box office
on 5232 2077.
