Southern Otway Landcare Network 'Landtalk'
Back from the Brink, Peter Andrews
Back from the Brink is the latest addition to the SOLN reference library, which outlines a very unique approach to farming. Peter Andrews is a horse breeder in the Hunter Valley. He has done what many have failed to do - restored creeks and wetlands to their natural state using a system he calls natural sequence farming.
You may have seen Peter Andrews on ABC TV's Australian Story. It was the story of a self made scientist who observed, theorised and then tested those thoeries on his property, Tarwyn Park, in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, over 30 years. In Back from the Brink, Peter describes his radical approach to farming.
Peter claims that Australia's environment is unlike any others in the world. He argues that farming has destroyed the vegetation, causing erosion and forcing the water to flow in deep gullies all the way to the sea, leaving the floodplains dry and the underground aquifers no longer recharging. So what do we have to do differently to be able to farm sustainably? Peter argues that we should outlaw weed control, as plants (all types of plants!) are the key to solving Australia's landscape problems. He believes that many farmers overstock their properties, and that we should be sensitive to the land and allow the land to grow a variety of greenery, as biodiversity is essential to landscape health.
Peter Andrew's philosophy on weeds has certainly caused a stir amongst land managers and agricultural scientists, and there are many doubters of his theories on landscape change. Research by the CSIRO and the Catchment Management Authorities is investigating his theories but has not as yet confirmed many. The book reads like a casual chat and the lack of scientific rigor is evident throughout. Peter himself recognizes that his theories on landscape change are not derived from any scientific literature, but rather stem from a lifetime of working on the land and trialing a variety of farming methods at Tarwyn Park.
If you have aspirations to make a contribution to improving habitat and conservation in our area, talk to Landcare!

Learn How To Build Business Relationships
Colac Otway Shire continues to roll out its Business
Week Program with a Building Relationships to Build
Business Success workshop in Colac and Apollo Bay
on August 23. The free workshop will equip businesses with the skills to develop customer and stakeholder loyalty, manage
conflict and plan for the long term. Economic Development Projects Officer, Michael Cosgriff said the workshop would help people understand how important relationships were to
business and how to formulate them. He said the three-hour workshop was suitable for people who were going into business or had been in business for less than five years.
"This workshop is vital for business owners looking to
further develop a powerful and cohesive team," Mr Cosgriff said. "It will not only show people the importance of
relationships in business; it will give them a chance to establish those relationships just by participating."
The workshop will be held from 10am in Apollo Bay and 6pm in Colac. To register please contact; Chris Spalding at Colac Otway Shire on 52329485 or
chris.spalding@colacotway. vic.gov.au.

August Club Network Meeting
The next Colac and District Club Network meeting will
look at risk management and why having a risk
management policy in place is vital. The meeting from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday, August 22 in Meeting Room 1 at COPACC aims to simplify the process of risk management. Colac Otway Shire's Manager Recreation and Arts Marg Scanlon said clubs would be given a user friendly template to develop their risk management policy. "A lot of clubs are turned off by the thought of managing risk and don't have anything concrete in
place," Ms Scanion said. "This session will demonstrate how easy it is to have a policy in place and how it will help support funding submissions. "There will also be an opportunity for people to mix and talk with other club representatives about their experiences." The Club Network has been running for over three years providing free support to sporting and recreation clubs and community groups in the Shire through
access to training and resources, assistance for
volunteers and required support as specified by the
member clubs. New members to the network are welcome.

APOLLO BAY COUNTRY WOMEN'S ASSOC.
"Not Just Tea & Scones" (with apologies to the A.B.C.) It is true though that there is a lot more to the C.W.A. that chit chat, cooking and craft. We strongly support medical research on many fronts, children in need, home and abroad, houses of refuge for abused wives and families, the homeless, visitation and care of the ill and lonely. Study of a different country and their customs, lifestyles and food every year. The C.W.A. has a representative in Government in an advisory capacity to present women's needs and views. These women are intelligent, experienced, wise and very warm communicators and we always look forward to meeting with them, sharing talks and learning from them.
We could really do with a larger membership in these busy times so if you read this and are interested in learning more we would be delighted to meet you. We hold a Friendship Day on Friday 24th August at Marrar Woom 1.30 pm. This is a quite informal afternoon, a meeting of friends over a cuppa and B.Y.O. plate (small). Marrar Woom is the Community Neighbourhood house in Pengilley Street, next to Child Care.
Our monthly formal meetings are the last Friday of every month again at Marrar Woom 1.30 pm. If you require more information or perhaps transport please phone Pat Goodlet 5237 6568, Eileen Hitchngs 5237 6277 or Norma Allen 5237 6680.

Local Chairman welcomes Bendigo Bank merger plans
Apollo Bay Community Bank® Steering Committee
Chairman Allen Hokin has welcomed Bendigo Bank's
announcement that it intends to merge with Adelaide
Bank. Mr Hokin said the proposed merger would provide
security to the Community Bank model, with both
banks agreeing the model would continue to grow
under the new entity. The new bank will have 1,3 million customers, more than 380 branches and will provide Bendigo Bank customers with access to additional branches and ATMs. "Bendigo Bank has announced that the Community Bank® model will continue to grow and prosper under the merged company, and assured us that the Bank's
commitment to supporting our communities will not
change. The merger would not result in any changes
to agreements under which any future profits from the
local company will be available for our board to return
to the Apollo Bay community," Mr Hokin said.
He welcomed the announcement that current Bendigo
Bank CEO Rob Hunt will remain as Managing Director
of the merged company.
"Mr Hunt's vision was the driving force behind
community banking. I am extremely pleased to note
that his new Board plans to focus him on advancing
the level of customer and partner advocacy, developed
in the Community Bank® model.
"We look forward to providing input to that process."
Mr Hunt said the merger still has a number of steps to
go through, with implementation expected to take a
number of months, and is conditional on Adelaide
shareholder approval and other required regulatory
and court approvals.
"In the meantime it's business as usual for our
campaign to bring a Community Bank® branch to the
Apollo Bay community."
More information about the proposed merger can be
found at www.bendigobank.com.au and you can
provide your feedback on the website or by phoning

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I read with interest Helen Arnold's article in last week's
News Sheet. Thank goodness there are still some concerned in the community about Apollo Bay. Congratulations Helen.
Esme Bell

Dear Editor,

Wake Up Apollo Bay
Several years ago our little town was bouncing with
entertainment thanks to the talented folk who lived here,
now I am tired of falling asleep over boring TV at nights
with no other interest.
Where have they gone? Too old, nonsense, there is still fire
(a little damp I admit) in this old gel yet. So give
yourselves a shake, what have you got to lose? Plenty to
gain,- we had so much fun.
Talent was there, musicians, thespians (note the spelling),
dancers, singers, comedians, choirs. All too many to
mention names, also organisers and backstagers.
Who can forget the can can girls, the sleezy Chinaman
with long fingernails, the ancient who couldn't count up to
10 without leaving 7 out ('cos' 7 ate nine) - well I was in a
trance!! And who would ever forget our little Penguins?
Simply gorgeous weren't they.
Wake up Apollo Bay (and Skenes & Marengo, Lavers
Hill) before we become just another tourist town on the
map just for the rich folk to live (those who could afford
the high cost of living here) and the tourists.
The artists I am referring to were all voluntary, small
entrance fees at concerts and all profits given to the
community.
Joan McAlister

Dear Editor,
Stewart Mac Arthur's answer to climate change along the
coast is to throw a token amount of federal funding to
promote Great Ocean Road touring. His appreciation of our "green forest" cannot be taken seriously given that he has always been fully supportive of destroying the Otway forest for export Woodchips. With our rising sea levels, storm surges, flooding, drought and bushfires, and our looming oil crisis, our fast growing tourism industry along the coast will be impacted upon. Our tourism industry needs to become >>>

clean and green with incentives for any developments to be ecologically sustainable, and a significant investment in renewable energy. While recognizing that the Great Ocean Road region is a magnificent destination for all and tourism is one of our biggest earners, we need to address the real issues at ground level for the people who live and work in the area. Workers who service the booming tourism industry are faced with unaffordable rents and house prices, and are
disadvantaged by the Federal government's Workchoices,
with hospitality workers being officially at the bottom of the
barrel. Also, we have inadequate infrastructure along the coast to cope with the increasing visitation. Stewart MacArthur's absence at the recent Climate Change
forum in Geelong was particularly noticeable. The
Government's commitment to addressing climate change,
can be seen by visitors as they drive along the Great Ocean
Road and see the plumes of noxious gases and pollution
billowing from Alcoa's dirty brown coal power station and
brown coal mine at Angelsea.

Dear Editor,
Fish 'n' Chips Babies
Did you know that tiny new born babies in Africa are
presently being sent home wrapped up like fish 'n' chips in
newspaper, or even plastic shopping bags, for warmth.
When the ladies from the Golf Club heard this news many
players asked Val Higman for a copy of the knitting
patterns for jumpers and beanies. Some mothers and sisters
of the golfers have also taken on this task. Now the
knitting needles are clicking away to a steady beat.
In just a few weeks, Val has been given 13 jumpers and 21
beanies to take back to Benalla where they will be packed
up and sent away to these needy babies.
Our community is certainly a caring one.
Where there is a need our folks readily respond to help
others less fortunate than ourselves. It is great to be a part
of this lovely town and community.
Sandy Toone
