Wildlife Emergency
13 000 WILDLIFE
13 000 94535 Koala rescue
New Years Eve at Cape Patton
The Apollo Bay Group of Wildlife Victoria extends
their thanks to the various Police Officers from
our district for advice of this koala's plight,
for waiting while a member of our group travelled
to the scene, and also for their help with its
successful relocation to safe habitat.
Coming on to dusk this chap had got himself stranded
up the cliff face above the Great Ocean Road at
Cape Patton and posed a clanger to both his own
well being and to passing traffic had he lost
his grip and fallen to the road.
This was just one of the numerous calls which
we receive each year from our local Police reporting
the location of such distressed, sick, injured
or orphaned wildlife. We thank them one and all
for their ongoing concern and co-operation. Apollo

Spurge Purge Action
Group (SPAG) Taking Shape!
Sea Spurge (Euphorbia paralias) a
highly invasive environmental weed
which is taking over our local dunes
and disrupting natural ecological
processes. Sea Spurge sap is highly
toxic to the skin and eyes, making
the plant harmful to humans and a
danger to local and visiting families
who enjoy our beaches.
To maximise resources and community
support, the SOLN has formed the Spurge
Purge Action Group (SPAG!) to control
the spread of this invasive weed along
our coasts from Skenes Creek to Marengo.
SPAG aims to assign local stretches
of beach to individuals to control
Sea Spurge through hand pulling small
patches when they visit their beach.
We have already generated fantastic
interest in this innovative group
but we still need more hands to make
your favourite beach spurge-free!
There is a group working bee next
Wednesday (21st January) afternoon
to pull a more dense infestation of
Sea Spurge at Marengo Beach in conjunction
with the with the Townies group. See
below for more details.
When: Wednesday 21st January, 2-4pm
Where: Meet at the Barham River bridge
carpark. Bring: gloves, hat, sunglasses,
small gardening spade/fork. SOLN can
also provide gloves and equipment
if you don't have any. Tea?: You betcha!
Afternoon tea will be provided.
If you are interested in joining SPAG
and or have any other queries regarding
Sea Spurge please call the SOLN office
on the number below.

It's that time of the year again when we are on
the look out for those dedicated few who put their
hands up, year after year, to swap their effort
(8hrs) for a ticket. We call them "friends"
because that's what they are, and without them the
festival would be all the poorer (in every sense
of the word). There is a 'Friends' form on the website
or you can ring the office to put your name down
to be part of this great adventure. For those locals
who are already registered, we will contact you
by the end of February with your roster.

A HUGE THANK
YOU
I would like to personally thank Jamie and Penny
Pickett from the Carnival for their generosity on
New Year's Eve with the excellent fireworks display.
It was awesome. You guys are the best! Also I am
glad to see Otway Health must be financial enough
as the lucky ticket booth has been un-manned most
of the holidays. Keep up the good work Jamie , Penny

BERT
Bertie darling lives in Ramsden Avenue with Judy,
Peter & Marj. He is named for Bert Darling,
father of Cheryle, Kerryn and Lyndon. Both Berts
had beautiful brown eyes. Lila and Bert were friends
from our days at Wongarra. The 4-legged Bert is
now 13 1/2 a good age for a Jack Russell.
Once upon a time Bert loved running on the beach,
played a mean game of soccer, did a bit of skin
diving and was into everything. These days he's
a bit slower and is totally deaf, but can smell
a carrot or an apple from another room! Bert is
a very happy and healthy and learned chap - fruit
and sudoku every day! |
