Foreshore News Dogs
Breakfast & Hooded Plovers
Coast Care / Coast Action in partnership
with the foreshore committee held a successful
'Dogs Breakfast' event on the foreshore
last Friday morning. About 10 dogs and their
owners attended and were informed about
the status of dog regulations pertaining
to the foreshore. Special guest Dr Grainne
Maguire also addressed the group about her
work with Birds Australia that involves
monitoring of Hooded Plovers along the Victorian
coast. Only 200 breeding pairs remain on
our coast and the species is considered
'threatened'. Dr Grainne has been assisting
the committee with signage and information
on best practice for trying to mitigate
the threats to these vulnerable birds. Dr
Grainne noted in her last regular email
report to the monitors at all sites in the
state that the Barham River site was of
particular concern; "/ was appalled
at the number of human and dog prints moving
through this fenced area and the blatant
disrespect of this site by people; the locals
at the dogs breakfast seemed to think it
was mostly visitors to the area. Kelly,
a volunteer visiting from Wales, will be
down at Apollo Bay this week talking to
people on the beaches to raise awareness
about the importance of these 2 sites in
the area." As mentioned above Birds
Australia has organised for Kelly to work
at both local sites this week to help raise
awareness about how much of a threat people
and their dogs are to these birds. The committee
is providing free accommodation for Kelly
and Dr Grainne to assist with this work.
I noted in last week news that while erecting
new signage at Wild Dog Creek we found a
damaged egg that had obviously been lifted
from a near by nest and then dropped near
the fence line. This could have been done
by an uncontrolled dog. It can not be emphasised
strongly enough that dogs be kept on a lead
walking through these fenced areas. Also
do not stop when in these areas, instead
walk through them at the waters edge with
your dog on a lead. Uncontrolled dogs could
destroy a nest in the blink of an eye.
Draft Victorian Coastal Strategy The Victorian
Coastal Strategy in its two previous incarnptions
has been the principle strategic document
for informing planning, development, sustainability
decisions on the Victorian coast since 1997.
The next version of the document is now
out in its draft form for public comment.
It has been on public display since before
Christmas and comments are being accepted
till the end of January. This is an important
document and I urge ali people who have
an interest in decision making on our coast
to comment on its contents; however small
those concerns maybe your input is important.
The document can be found online at the
Victorian Coastal Councils website: www.vcc.vic.gov.au

Historical Society 31st Annual Art Show.
The local Historical Society has
once again held their annual Art Show, at
the Catholic Church Hall. This Art Show has
been part of the summer calendar in the town
for 31 years. The artists who exhibit come
from many groups across Victoria and offer
a high standard of work. A total of 34 works
were sold, this compares favourably with other
shows throughout the S.W of Victoria. Many
of the buyers were from interstate and two
overseas visitors went home twith paintings
depicting our wonderful piece of Paradise.
On behalf of the Historical Society I would
like to thank; the Traders who sponsored the
show thru advertisements in our catalogue;
the Catholic Church committee who make the
hall available to us every year; Jane Gross
and her band of workers from the Arts Council;
the Historical Society members and their families
and friends who give their time not only during
the show, but behind the scenes and in the
lead up. Upwards of 400 volunteer hours are
required to run the show and without these
people it just could not happen. Last but
not least, the visitors to the show, those
who came just to browse, and those who purchased
many fine works, we hope you enjoy them and
return again next year. We will take a few
weeks off now and then begin planning for
the 2009 Show. Of course when we are not running
the Art Show, we also staff the Museum. The
Museum is open every weekend, ail School Holidays
and Public Holidays between 2pm & 5pm.
Come out and have a wander thru, we have many
interesting historical records relating to
our town and surrounding area as well as family
histories & artefacts. You might just
get hooked on History! Ruth Hedrick, Secretary,
AB&DHS
Community Bank®........
... getting closer by the day
Community Bank® chair, Allen
Hokin reported that with over 50% of the pledged
capital to hand, the Board was well on the
way to raising the necessary funds for the
establishment of the town's own Community
Bank® "However" he stated
"we need all our pledgees who have not
yet returned their applications to do so as
soon as possible. The Board was aware that
the launch a week before Christmas was a difficult
time for many, but decided to proceed then
rather than defer the project into 2008. They
believed that all the hard work had been done,
so why delay." Everyone will have noticed
the rapid progress on the premises in Pascoe
Street and the Board is looking forward to
the opening in a couple of months.
A big thank you to all who have returned their
applications, and to all those who have already
committed their private and business accounts
to the new enterprise.
Should anyone require assistance in completing
their applications, feel free to phone Allen
Hokin on 5237 6347, Sue Kennedy on 5237 6712
or Anton Tibbitson 5237 6298.
Meantime, please get those applications in
so we can close off the share register and
dispatch your share certificates in this great
community project.

| Letters
to the Editor |
Open letter to the
AB Music Festival Committee. Dear Peter,
It is with great sadness that I must boycott the
2008 Music Festival. This is a conscience decision
by my loyal band members and myself. At the October
2007 Festival meeting you said in your keynote speech
to all members present, that you and your new committee
would bring peace and harmony to the Festival, legal
fighting would stop, we would all "move on"
and deliver a great 2008 Music Festival. Your speech
was welcomed with great applause, relief and handshakes
and well wishes all around the room. Now five months
later, you and your committee have not stopped the
INSANE legal fighting. This constant fighting is
damaging to Apollo Bay - the name of Apollo Bay,
our beautiful town, all the Apollo Bay traders and
business people and we musicians. You promised this
stupid legal fighting would stop. When it stops
I will be available to preform. Everyone I know
is sick of this mad fighting. The Festival is a
great opportunity to bring our community together
and all the visitors together to simply enjoy the
music, enjoy friends, enjoy Apollo Bays unique environment,
enjoy all the wonderful gourmet food from our fabulous
cafes and hotels, and have fun -without this constant
legal action hanging over the festival.
I have spent 24 years performing all over Australia
and overseas - always talking up our beautiful Apollo
Bay, the Great Ocean Road, and the mighty Otway
Ranges. Now everyone asks me about this CRAZY legal
fighting. Fix it and stop the rot. Yours sincerely,
Andy Richardson "Howlin Wind".
Dear Editor
Following the recent articles in the Echo and Herald
Sun, the ABMF committee would like to state that
it is not engaged in any legal action against the
previous festival committee. We would like to restate
our position that both parties should accept mediation
to resolve any outstanding legal issues. The current
committee is only focused on producing an outstanding
community festival! With tickets selling fast we
are very confident in achieving that goal. Peter
Fillmore, President, ABMF
SANTAS VISIT TO THE POST OFFICE
On Christmas Eve Santa took time off from his busy
schedule to visit the Post Office here in Apollo
Bay. A day of sunshine, fun and laughter surrounded
Santa and his friendly helper distributing lolly
bags. The Melody Makers sang Carols and that attracted
more than 70 children and parents which than we
expected. Eddie and Sylvia thank Santa and his friendly
elf and the Melody Makers choir for the visit. |

Dear Editor,
As part of rehabilitation program relating to a
recem accident, I have been swimming in the Apollo
Bay pool on £ regular basis over summer. I
am unaware of previous concerns raised relating
to funding of the Apollo Bay Pool, but would like
to draw attention to the unfortunate state ol the
facility.
I notice that the quality of water although rigorousK
maintained in terms of chlorine content by the excelleni
volunteers that runs the pool, can be quite disgusting
on some days. I find that the murkiness of the water
impedes one from seeing more than two meters underwater
with goggles and that an increasing amount of sediment
has found its way to the deep end. It is a cocktail
of filth. The tiles on the side of the pool are
falling off in to the pool (where they remain).
The changing rooms appear not to have been cleaned
in the last month. For instance, the same pair of
board shorts have been hanging in the mens since
December, while a leaking shower pours water continually
in defiance of water restrictions.
Given that the most common users of the pool are
young children, I feel the current situation is
most unfortunate. It is a shame that politics appears
to be denying the youth of Apollo Bay the minimum
standards of maintenance that are acceptable. If
there is a problem with the funding of the facility,
despite the considerable revenue collected from
Apollo Bay in the form of rates, surely for the
sake of the kids that play in the pool, some solution
is possible? Devices! are available for under $600.00
on 'ebay'. Less than the quarterly rates for one
average home in Apollo Bay. The only other alternative
is to take a trip to the recently constructed Freshwater
facility in Colac, where the water quality (and
temperature) is maintained by modem equipment and
the changing rooms are spotless, for all year round
use.
At the end of the day I can't help but think that
the children that use the pool as well as the local
students deserve much better. I invite the local
councillors to join me in some lap at any time that
suits them; bearing in mind the opening hours are
limited to 12-5 daily, to see for themselves. Sincerely,
Philip Talihinanidis, AKA'Taki'

Is there anyone in the community who has fruit that
would like to donate it for jam making for the OPSHOP?
Last year (Dec 2006 -2007) I made a grand total
of 1185 jars and bottles of pickle, jam, etc for
this cause and I would appreciate the produce. I
make this at my own expense, with a small percentage
of donated sugar. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
I will pick the fruit myself if it is within the
town as I only have an electric car to get around
Phone me on 5237 7554 With Thanks Vicki Leorke.
