CLARIFICATION
The following notice appeared on the front page
o last week's edition without the committee's logo,
under a number of Shire notices. It may have seemed
that the project is a Shire project. This project
is a committee initiated & managed project with
funds from DSE & the committee.
Visitor Information Centre
Discovery Walk Work will begin this week on construction
of a viewing deck as part of the new 'Discovery
Walk'.
As a consequence the walking track behind the Visitor
Information Centre will be closed for about 3 weeks.
We apologise for this necessary action.
Anyone who is interested can view plans of the proposed
works in the Visitor Information Centre.
When completed, the walk will allow for people of
all levels of mobility to enjoy a very picturesque
portion of the Apollo Bay dunes and also a viewing
platform offering views to the harbour and Cape
Paton. Included in the walk will be information
on plant species, coastal processes, Indigenous
& European heritage of the area.

22nd June 10.00am
The Apollo Bay Landcare Groups restoration

June to replace
them with indigenous species. If you
fish, walk,
birdwatch orjust enjoy the Wild Dog

coming along to lend a hand.

Where: Turn up Wild Dog Rd and look
for the Landcare
sign to find the meeting place
Feed: There will be a BBQ to follow
at Carole & David
Webley's, Wildgate, 10 Wild Dog Rd
Bring: Gumboots and Gloves, own BBQ
meat and
something to share, drinks to be provided,
SOLN w7ill
provide tree planters if you don't
have one.
Seed collectors please note
new SOLN seed prices now available.
Each year SOLN reviews our seed prices
to keep them in line with seed banks
across the state, and to factor in
changing environmental conditions
that influence the availability of
native seed. Many of our buy in prices
have increased significantly since
2007 and this offers an added incentive
for community collectors to get to
know their own backyard and support
our local Seedbank. The SOLN Seedbank
is not for profit, it is maintained
to supply nurseries and direct seed
projects with seed to assure that
all trees supplied by SOLN have the
correct provenance i.e. seed comes
from remnant bush from the same area
as where the seedlings are being planted.
We welcome new seed collectors, and
encourage people to begin by getting
to know the bush in your own backyard.
If you have remnant vegetation on
private land and are keen to do some
collecting please contact our office
for training in best practice collection
methods, field data sheets and the
2008/2009 seed requirements and price
lists. Please note that the SOLN support
centre has a wide range of cleaning
and extraction equipment that is available
for use by community seed collectors,
access to this equipment means that
all you need to begin collecting is
a bit of training, some bags, some
secateurs and a passion for preserving
the genetic integrity 0 the Southern
Otwavs flora.
If you have aspirations to make a
contribution to improving habitat
and conservation in our area, talk
to Landcare!

ABP12C Parents &
Friends Group
Tuesday the 12th June School Council held
another well attended meeting of 8 men, 7
women and a school captain rep; the room was
filled with ideas, discussion and energy.
16 people attending any meeting is worth mentioning,
especially a School that has less than 290
students. This indicates the depth of support
that people want to give. Frank Fotinas gave
a presentation of selling bricks for the schools
new rebound wall, this is another way of getting
our children extra play equipment, funds to
pay for it and having something that will
remind future students and pass of what can
be achieved when we all work together.
Friday night was the secondary school production.
"The Wild One" 50 years of rock!
Congratulation to all that participated in
the Rock n Roll event, of music, acting and
news flashes of the past. Well done to the
teachers that had the foresight and will to
put our students on stage; with limited funds
and a great imagination it is truly amazing
what can be done.
The Parents & Friends Group has had its
AGM this week. Details of the new committee
will be in next week's new sheet. I have officially
retired from the President position. I would
like to thank everybody that has been supportive
over the past 3 years. We have achieved a
lot and it can not be done on your own. The
changes we have made, the new friendships
I have formed, the knowledge I have learnt
has given me an appreciation of the public
school system, and the amount of work it takes
to keep a school running. All school are as
great as the people in them. Good luck to
the new committee... Thanks again Sheryl Biddle-Van

COUNCIL WELCOMES FEEDBACK ON
REPORTING PROCESSES
The Colac Otway Shire has welcomed
findings from the Auditor-General about performance
reporting in Local Government.
The Mayor, Cr Chris Smith, said the Auditor-General's
recommendations about performance reporting
supported the Council's excellence in the
area, after Colac Otway Shire was awarded
Best Annual Report for its 2006/07 report
at the Municipal Association of Victoria Annual
Report Awards. "Our Annual Report
is an important document in communicating
to the community our achievements and challenges,
and we strive for the highest standard in
delivering our report," Cr Smith said.
"We have worked hard to ensure that everything
we achieve (and do not achieve) is easily
understood and well presented to the community."
The Auditor-General's findings indicated that
there were no independent, authoritative standards
for annual reports and council policies.
"New guidelines for performance reporting
would help all councils to continue to improve
in this area," Cr Smith said.
Under the Local Government Democratic Reform
Act 2003, local councils are required to set
strategic objectives and report annually on
their performance.

MEETING
FRIDAY JUNE 20th, 2008 AT C J. KEANE#S
Meeting
Room. AT 7.30 PM
For fifty-two years the Show has been run
for our area, by a totally voluntary and committed
group of people. The Show is an opportunity,
not only to check out farm and other animals,
but also to showcase the talents and skills
of many people in our community: the last
Show in 2006 experienced the worst weather
for many years, but had the highest number
of homecraft, horticulture and art entries
since 2001. Without people willing to work
during the year, the Show did not go ahead
in 2008. With a new group of volunteers and
a date change we are looking forward to a
new Autumn show in 2009. Come to the meeting
to elect our new Committee to ensure that
our Show continues to be a vital part of this
community.
Talk to Tony Webber (PH 5237 6926) or any
committee member if you would like to become
involved. Or just come to the meeting.

great things for our school. Fantastic social

together in a fun and social way. The Easter
raffles and other fundraising activities have
raised in excess of $18,000. some of this
money has contributed to the building of the
new playground and other important projects
around the school. ¦Regular gardening-bees
have Kept us busy, the Kids entertained and

REPORT
C.W.A. 80TH Birthday A.G.M. State Conference
was held over 3 days in the Melbourne Town
Hall month of May 08. Representatives of
Apollo Bay Branch left Colac 8am Tuesday
27th May to attend a Ecumenical Church Service
in the magnificent St. Michael's Uniting
Church, Melbourne performed by Dr. Francis
Macnab. Choir singers were C.W.A. members
from Victoria. We then walked to the Melb.Town
Hall to be entertained by "Songin Costume"
performed by members of branches throughout
Victoria. The Town Hall looked spectacular
decorated with a huge cardboard 80th Birthday
cake surrounded by flowers. That evening
the C.W.A. State Conference and AGM was
officially opened. Wednesday 28th and Thursday
29th proceeded with speakers, reports and
resolutions. A beautiful birthda cake was
cut to celebrate our 80 years as Australian
Country women as we are all Australian country
women, we live in the country of Aus. Some
of our resolutions example - "to urge
the State Government of Victoria that identification
cards such as student and senior cards be
recognized in all states of Australia regardless
of residential address" earned by the
C.W.A. delegates at the Conference. C.W.A
Vic "That we urge the Australian Government
to institute an enquiry into the importation
of fresh and canned fruit and vegetables
and labeling". C.W.A. Vic " That
we recommend to the State Government that
all freight trains be filled with lights
or reflectors on the sides to enable car
and truck travelers to see the oncoming
trains approaching." C.W.A. Vic "That
we urge V/Iine and the Victoria Government
to revert to the "checked luggage "
system which was withdrawn on 1st Jan. 08".
These resolutions were approved by the C.W.A.
delegates at the Conference. These are just
a few resolutions we will approach the right
authorities with. The Conference was a great
success and we are not "Just tea and

Letters
to the Editor

Dear Editor,
It was with a sense of dismay that I read the report
headed 'Yet Another Parking Study' in last week's
AB News (12 June 2008), courtesy of Allen Hokin.
A couple of years back I added the following cynical
comment to a letter on some action of Council: The
problem is one of no confidence that any proposition
can be carried out. History tells me we cycle through
the following steps:
1. Develop a plan for the next 20 years. Include
community input and consultation.
2. Don't enforce any requirements of the plan and
spend as little as possible.
3. Five years later, when very little has actually
been done, revise the plans again. This time ignore
previous consultation and override previous decisions,
especially where unfavourable to developers.
4. Re-do all the plans and try to build up public
confidence again. Restate the obvious and introduce
as much spin as possible.
5. Repeat very five years -go to 1 above.
Just alter some of my time lines and we are living
a 'Yes Minister' script. I am not finding any of
this very funny especially since Council seems to
delight in using our money to pay for consultants
and they are quite happy to increase our rates.
We need action, not planning ad infinitum. John
Spencer, Apollo Bay

Last week, Apollo Bay Patchworkers
and Quilters enjoyed a great afternoon at Marrar
Woorn. Due to a prior engagement, I arrived Vi hour
late. About 8 of our regular members were busy in
the front 2 rooms, with machines whirring, the available
floor space was being used as design boards to lay
out various blocks correctly. The results were spectacular
- so much so, I was compelled to come home to get
the camera! In addition, other ladies were tackling
another problem on one of the tables. There was
fabulous working buzz. So if you are interested
to see what happens on the first Tuesday afternoon
of each month, when the Patchworkers meet, call
in and share a coffee or cup of tea with us, and
see what we are doing. Or alternatively we meet
the 3rd Monday evening of each month, at a member's
house. Evening Meeting details are published in
the News sheet prior to this meeting. J.Hagan
Our Patchwork and Quilting meeting last evening
marked the sixth anniversary of our group. In June
2002 Sue McKenzie, Jan Stewart and myself decided
to see if there would be any interest in forming
a group. Of the nine ladies who attended only three
of us remain. However we now have sixteen members
and would welcome any new members. Our members do
machine piecing and hand piecing or a combination
of both and we are at all levels of workmanship
so don't be concerned if you are an absolute novice,
we'll show you how. We staged a very successful
Quilt exhibition in 2004 and are thinking of another....maybe
some time in the future. For the past three years
we have had a quilting weekend in May with a recognized
tutor to learn new techniques. Just think two full
days without interruptions to cut, sew and chat
to our hearts content. So if you are tempted come
and join us. All you need is to appear on the first
Tuesday of the month at Marrar Woorn or at 7.30pm
third Monday of the month at one of our homes or
you can attend both as some of us do. Our meetings
are noted in the news sheet. Val Cameron |
