Southern Otway Landcare Network 'Landtalk'
SOLN welcomed a new Landcare coordinator last week, Anna O'Brien, who has come from working with the Department of Agriculure, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in Canberra. Anna has a strong interest in agriculture, sustainable land management and climate change. She has completed a Bachelor degree with Honours in Geography and has undertaken projects which focus on building the capacity of rural communties to adapt to changes in their local climate. Anna hopes to bring a new dimension to future Landcare projects which would recognise the potential risks of climate change at the local scale.
Anna joins the rest of the SOLN team, including Greg John and the recently recruited part-time coordinators, Kristin Lees and Dianne Inglis. Kristin has been connected with the Southern Otway region for the last 15 years and has a wealth of local historical and environmental knowledge through working with Parks Victoria and the Cape Otway Lighthouse, and has completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences and Environment. She is running the Waterwatch program for SOLN and would like to remind all current Waterwatchers that Brenda Skene will be shadow monitoring our testing sites over the next month. Please ring the SOLN office to book a time.
Dianne has lived in Apollo Bay for the last 20 years. She has been actively involved in a number of community groups and projects, including SOLN's own Townies' group and local tree plantng projects along the coastal walk. Dianne is running SOLN's Support Centre (Nursery), which is located off Montrose Avenue, Apollo Bay. Dianne also organises activities for the Townies group every Wednesday at the Support Centre. She would like to remind all Landcare members that the Support Centre is available for their own seed storage and propagation during the week.

APOLLO BAY AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY BANK©
Feasibility Study
As part of the current feasibility study being conducted in the district on behalf of the Apollo Bay and District Community Bank© Steering Committee, representatives of the
firm AFS & Associates of Bendigo, which is conducting the study independently, came to Apollo Bay on Monday May 28 in order to run interviews as part of the feasibility study
process. We would like to thank all interviewees for
their attendance and readiness to take part in the process, resulting in a very successful day. The generosity of all those people who have endorsed the idea of a community bank by
attending interviews, completing forms, and pledging support may feel assured of their contribution to the formation of a community bank in our district. We would particularly like to thank C.J.Keane for so generously allowing us the
use of their conference room not only for the interviews but also for our weekly steering committee meetings.

$2.4 Million Apollo Bay P-12 Upgrade Officially Opened
"The students of Apollo Bay P-12 College will benefit enormously from the $2.4 million facilities officially opened" Senator Michael Ronaldson said.
This project involved the construction of a new science block consisting of two science rooms with a preparation and store room, a new arts technology block consisting of a music room, a band room, two music practice rooms, a materials and technology room and an IT and visual communication room.
"These outstanding facilities represent a further advancement in educational opportunities for the students of Apollo Bay P-12 College and reflect the ever changing environment in which learning is undertaken.""The school community should be very proud of the success this school has displayed in developing and implementing this building programme. The academic success of its students with all VCE students passing last year, which is also highly commendable

Shire Receives Fire Funding
Colac Otway Shire has received $70,000 in grants
from the State and Federal Government for upgrades
to four fire access roads in the Shire.
The funding, provided through the Country Fire
Authority, is for the upgrade of the Silks Access and
Gaines Access bridges in Carlisle, Old Coach Road in
Skenes Creek and Prices Lane in Birregurra.
Colac Otway Shire's Municipal Fire Prevention Officer,
David Fenn said the funding would help improve
response times for the fire brigade and therefore
create a greater level of community safety.
"Fire access roads allow for the safe and fast access
of trucks to areas where road access is limited and off
road firefighting would be difficult," Mr Fenn said.
"They are particularly important to the early
containment of an outbreak of fire."
The grants were provided under the 2007-2008 Fire
Access Road Subsidy Scheme/Bushfire Mitigation
Program.
Committee Will Assess Road Closures on GOR
Colac Otway Shire, in partnership with Vicroads and the Surfcoast Shire, has formed a committee to consider future requests for road closures for events on the Great Ocean Road. The group has developed a preliminary set of ; guidelines for considering requests for the closure of the road for events.
The types of events to be covered by these guidelines include triathlons, fun runs, marathons, community sporting events, cycling and other events that require the closure or part closure of the Great Ocean Road. Colac Otway Shire CEO Tracey Slatter said the number and length of road closures in recent times had prompted the need for organisers to establish the committee.
"Events bring a number of benefits to the community in terms of economic development and promote the shire to a broad range of visitors who may not otherwise visit the area," Ms Slatter said. "This is particularly true when events are held in off-peak times of the year.
"However, it is recognised that the closure of the Great Ocean Road has an impact on residents and business. "Road closures for events need to be kept to a minimum and evaluated in terms of the overall benefit it will provide the community. "We hope that through this committee we will have a means to review and make recommendations on future road closures as well as consult with key stakeholders to the decision." Ms Slatter said the committee would encourage representation from Victoria Police, Geelong Otway Tourism, State Government and members of local tourism and progress associations and other key stakeholders.

Dune Rehabilitation
Last week Harry Thorman from the Queenscliff Marine Discovery Centre was in Apollo Bay to conduct sessions with different classes from the Apollo Bay P-12 College. While the weather was not the best (no one can complain about it raining) all but one of the planned classes got to listen to Harry talk about dune ecology and the coastal processes that form dunes, their vegetation and habitat. Harry also made the students aware of the negative impacts people have on the dunes and what we can do to help improve and protect dune environments. During each session some practical work was done installing brush matting and planting dune species along eroded sections of Apollo Bay. Please respect the work done by our students and avoid the areas that have been brush matted and planted out.
Harry is a great presenter who is a natural when it comes to communicating with students and adults alike. On Wednesday last week the Grade 3-4's were also joined by the Landcare Townies' group and a number of parents. It was really great to see these groups working together for the benefit of our local environment.
The committee has more work planned for the coming weeks involving large scale plantings. If you have an enthusiasm to help with such work you will be warmly welcomed to our 'Friends of the Foreshore' working bees. Watch this space for more info.
Theft from the Recreation Reserve If anyone has information regarding the theft of a Rinnia 16 instantaneous gas Hot Water Service from the new cabin at the entrance to the recreation reserve could they please inform the Apollo Bay Police? The theft occurred sometime on the weekend before last.

Training for our Himalayas Quest at the end of the year is progressing well with the group undertaking a training hike in the Grampians last weekend. This was a team building, fitness and equipment testing weekend and was both enjoyable and tiring for us all.
We also had a wine-tasting fundraiser in the
Krambrook room at the Apollo Bay Hotel last
Wednesday night and our thanks go to Charles,
Merrilyn and Kane for their help and generosity in
allowing us to use their venue. Thanks to the great
support from the locals we were able to raise about
$1000- towards our quest. There was a really
supportive feel to the night.
Stay tuned for our next update in the next few
weeks. Many thanks - The Himalayan Quest group.

Each week we will be bringing you useful information about exercise and handy hints for keeping active so don't forget to check out this space.

No More Excuses

'I don't have time to be active daily'. Doing physical exercise each day doesn't have to mean finding extra time. Think smarter and try to find ways of moving more during the day. Adults should be doing at least 30min of exercise each day, try breaking this down into two 15min sessions or three 1Omin ones.

A&P12C Parents & Friends Group
Dear Parents & Friends
Monday evening the 4th June we celebrated our first AGM.
Thank you to the 10 faithfuls that constantly show your support. Thank you to the regular faces that turn up to the garden clean ups, volunteer to help teachers and many other activities that all students enjoy.
We now have two new faces on the committee, Sue and Marion sharing the Secretary position; I welcome you both and thank you for putting up your hand. Mike McQuinn has excepted the role of treasurer for another year; and yes I will stand for another year. We popped champagne, enjoyed some of the food left from the afternoon celebration, and enjoyed a very chatty meeting; that finished much later than normal. Many valid topics have been discussed, these will certainly find there place on the agenda. I would like to congratulate Liz Hanger and staff for putting on a great event The choir is certainly a joy to listen to and a great way to starting an event. Liz invited 10 very important guest, they were taken on a tour to see our new building and old. Community support was a little light on, but I'm sure all that attended appreciated the importance of the day. Liz Hanger and school captains Stephanie Dorney and Alan Lawler welcomed the special guest and opened the ceremony, klause Holzer spoke on behalf of the school council and other speeches moved the day along in a formal manner. The school band played music that most of us oldies remember from our own youth. I do anyway... This was a very important day, a day to say thanks to all that worked hard for the first stage of buildings and to invite those that may have some influence for the second stage. Most parents I talk to feel we are due for a total face lift and I couldn't agree more. Remember your membership form, fill them out and leave at the front office.
Encouraging parents to join encourages unity.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
530 HOME-DEVELOPMENT ON WETLANDS
ALONG THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD -WORLD TOURIST DESTINATION RENOWNED
FOR ITS "NATURAL BEAUTY" Who will lose if this "development" went ahead? The natural environment will lose, as it always does in such a situation. The people, from the developers to the councillors, to the residents and the tourists will lose, because each time a decision is made in favour of money and profit over that of care of the land and the earth we live on - a little piece of their soul is lost. The people who oppose this development suffer because they have not drawn a line in the sand and said: "NO".
If this development goes ahead - there are only losers - there are no winners. Peter Shalless

TO THE PEOPLE OF APOLLO BAY

Those who ask as to how my sister Beryl Mannington is, the report is as follows. Beryl is battling brain cancer at present, along with 3 other tumours. The chemo has helped the 3 but not the brain one. She has had a bad week this week with chest and blood infections and at present is in Geelong as of 5/6/07 (in hospital). When not in hospital she is at the McKellar Centre, Central Wing 45-95 Ballarat Rd North Geelong. Her weight has fallen dramatically to about 11 stone if not lighter. She would love to hear from her friends; visit or send her a note. Vicki Leorke

Apollo Bay Police News
The tourists have all gone home but there seems to be some thieves and other crooks in town. In the last 14 days there has been 8 crimes reported.
1. Between midnight and 4 am Sunday morning 03/06/07 some fool decided to walk over a car in Otway Vista causing significant panel damage. The windscreen wipers were also attacked.
2. Between 25/05 & 28/05 a thief has decided to help himself to a hot water service unit which was attached to the rear of a new cabin at the Recreation Reserve.
3. Between 25/05 & 28/05 another thief has decided to take light fittings from outside the Shire Office in Nelson Street.
4. On the evening on Thursday the 24th a thief has stolen Number Plates of a car in a driveway in Banksia Court. 1 plate was found in the Court and the other was found on the foreshore near Cawood St.
5. Overnight on 23/05 & 24/05 a thief has stolen property from a car in Surf Ave., Skenes Creek
6. On the same night a car was stolen from Surf Ave. This vehicle was found on 28/05/07 at the bottom of the hill near twisted willow. It appears that the car was vandalised at the top of Old Coach Road, driven toward Colac and pushed down the hill. The result of this exercise caused substantial damage to the fences at the property. That's the second stolen car that has been found at that location.
7. Overnight on 24/05 & 25/05 a Burglar smashed a window to get into a house in Vista Ave, Skenes Creek and stole nearly $3,000 worth of property.
To solve these crimes we need your help. Any snippet of information you have may help us locate the culprits for these senseless acts. If you can help Ring the Police on 52 376 750. David Hand Sgt 21036.
