A New Year lament....
Twas the week after Christmas, and all through
the house,
nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies
I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste
at the holiday parties had gone to my waist!
When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a
lumber). I'd remember the marvellous meals I'd
prepared;
the gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared.
The wine and rum balls, the bread and the cheese,
and the way I'd never said, "No thank you,
please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt,
and prepared once again to do battle with dirt
---
I said to myself, as only I can;
"You can't spend a summer disguised as a
man!" So - away with the last of the sour
cream dip,
get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip.
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
'till all the additional kilos have vanished.
I won't have a cookie - not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a celery stick.
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie.
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I'm hungry,
I'm lonesome, and life is a bore —
but isn't that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to you all, and to all a good diet!

24 Hour Wildlife Emergency
13000 WILDLIFE
13000 94535
Since Christmas walkers may have come across
signs warning of the proximity to beached
seals. These signs advise that the sea!
is resting and is being monitored by Wildlife
Officers and Volunteers Wildlife Carers,
and request that people do not approach
within 50 metres.
Resting or injured seals may remain on beaches
for several days before returning to the
sea, and Wildlife experts agree that they
should be left alone to recover. The seal
pup which beached Christmas Day on the rocks
between Petticoat Creek and Skenes Creek
was transported four days later to Melbuorne
Zoo as it became apparent that it's condition
was deteriorating. Tests at the Zoo indicated
blood poisoning resulting from an abscess
beneath it's left front flipper.
The Apollo Bay Wildlife Group would like
to thank the many concerned beach walkers,
especially those with dogs who heeded the
signs and put their dogs on leads in order
to give the seal as wide a berth as possible
when passing.
Likewise thank you to the many dog walkers
respecting the signs around the roped off
Hooded Plover nesting sites on both Wild
Dog Road and Marengo beaches. These shy
little birds are an endangered species on
our coastline, and we must do all we can
to avoid encroaching on and disturbing their
nesting sites.
With more traffic on our roads during the
summer holidays there is an increased likelihood
of wildlife being injured or killed.
If you come across injured or orphaned native
animals or birds please phone the 24 Hour
Emergency Wildlife
number: 13000 WILDLIFE
13000 94535
Thank you, Apollo Bay Wildlife Group

'Summer by the Sea
starts with a splash in the southwest
The Department of Sustainability and Environment
(DSE) has launched the 13th annual summer
holiday program 'Summer by the Sea', with
hundreds of southwest Victorian residents
expected to take part. DSE's Executive Director
of Public Land Peter Watkinson said 'Summer
by the Sea' encouraged Victorians to learn
more about the state's unique marine environment.
"With more people choosing to visit
or live by Victoria's coast, it's important
we protect this important natural asset
for future generations," Mr Watkinson
said.
The annual holiday activity program is jointly
run by Coast Action and Coastcare, with
support from DSE. Around 15,000 people participate
every January in more than 240 events held
at 80 locations along Victoria's coastline.
Mr Watkinson said the program catered for
all interests and ages and most activities
are free. "Summer by the Sea encourages
people to get involved in marine conservation,
through a range of fun activities,"
he said. "The program gives young and
old alike the opportunity to dig for evidence
of dinosaurs, fossick for seashells or seek
out a shipwreck. Participants can also observe
a wide variety of marine plants and animals
— while paddling in a canoe, walking
along a beach, or splashing away with a
mask and snorkel. I want to commend 'Summer
by the Sea' coordinators who have worked
hard to provide such a diverse range of
activities." This year's theme is Life
on the Edge, to coincide with Coastcare's
national campaign to raise awareness of
Australia's fragile coastline.
Led by marine and coastal experts, Summer
by the Sea provides an opportunity for people
to learn more about Victoria's amazing coastline
firsthand. The Summer by the Sea program
encourages:
• responsible use of the coast and
marine environment by all Victorians;
• visitors to learn about human impacts
on coast and marine issues; and
• involvement in ongoing conservation
projects along the coast.
Some of the activities in the southwest
are:
• Estuary Discovery
• Coastkids Beach Detectives
• Waterbugs & Minibeast Safaris
• and the ever popular Rockpool Rambles
For more information about Summer by the
Sea, visit www.dse.vic-gov.au/coasts and
click on the Coast Action/Coastcare link,

OTWAY
HEALTH NEWS |
Bring on the
Sun!!
Ever noticed how much easier life seems when the
sun's shining? Sun exposure stimulates all sorts
of body processes that help it stay strong, happy
and healthy. Unfortunately, heat and excess sun
exposure can also stress the body. Dehydration and
sunburn are the most common signs of distress and
can be easily avoided. Plan for your time in the
sun carefully, cover up and drink regularly. Remember
that by the time you feel thirsty, you're already
dehydrated. Sunscreen takes 20 - 30 minutes before
it starts working - so don't leave it until you
start to feel burnt before you put it on. Younger
and older people are more affected by the heat.
Older people are 20% more likely to die at temperatures
over 30°C. Kids dehydrate much faster than adults
- so take special care of those around you on hot
days - especially the little Nippers!!!
Have a great Summer - Play Safe.
Strength Training Classes
Classes consist of exercise with hand and leg weights
designed to strengthen muscles and bones. Suitable
for all ages but aimed at over 50's, wear loose
comfortable clothing.

Group, have been overwhelmed by the support we have
received since the fire destroyed the Uniting Church
Hall along with all our toys and supplies on 14th
December. The loss of this magnificent historical
Church Hall is absolutely terrible not only for
the Uniting Church but also for the many people
and groups who made use of the Hal! on a weekly
basis, including our Play Group. We would like to
take this opportunity to thank the following people
and organizations for their donations of cash and
toys to help us re-establish our Play Group in 2009:
Apollo Bay Community & District Bank - Bendigo
Bank
Saint Vincent de Paul - Apollo Bay

Res Comm - South Melbourne
Variety Children's Charity
Amalgamated Couriers
Ocean Road Couriers
Ted Birch - Marnu
M. W. Conole - Cheltenham
Jean Costin - Hordern Vale
Pat Dickason - Apollo Bay
Glenn Broadhurst- Melbourne
Apollo Bay Kindergarten ... - and the many
anonymous people who have popped into the Bendigo
Bank and deposited money into our account.
We would also like to give a big THANK YOU to the
Apollo Bay Lions Club for their generous donation
of $2,000 to the Play Group.
We cannot thank you all enough for your support.
