SUCCESSFUL BANK LAUNCH
About 200 shareholders, customers and Apollo Bay citizens supported by Bank personnel from Bendigo, Melbourne and Geelong shared in the formal launch of Apollo Bay's own Community Bank last Monday. The occasion assisted by the Apollo Bay Choir and the P-12 School Choir acknowledged the great contribution made by the first Steering Committee in getting the project started and more latterly by the Board of Management who had worked so hard to see this valuable community enterprise become a reality.. All Bendigo Bank personnel commented on the splendour of the impressive new premises. As part of the celebrations the Bank sponsored a colouring competition for primary school students. Chairman, Allen Hokin, had earlier presented the six prize winners with certificates to enable them to open Piggy Bank Passbook accounts and so become early starters in the banking process.
Branch Manager, Phil Davey introduced his staff and encouraged the support of the community in this great new venture.
The Board was privileged to have Bendigo's CEO Retail Banking, Mr Mike Hurst, congratulate Apollo Bay on its wonderful achievement which reinforces the local focus inherent in the unique Community Bank concept. He spoke of the great success this concept has enjoyed and the contribution that has come to

small communities in just 10 years since its introduction, filling the void left by the closure of over 2000 branches by the major banks in the same period. Allen Hokin, in his address suggested that this was a truly historic occasion
The celebrations concluded with a well attended sausage sizzle to the accompaniment of Bert's Boogie.
Claire Smith, the bank's first customer enjoyed a dance
with Piggy after cutting the ribbon to the premises and
unveiling the plaque.

Cabin by the Bay hosts more families. Can you help?
The Cabin by the Bay Project continues its work of hosting families and individuals badly in need of a rest from stressful city lives often complicated by unforeseen misfortune or unexpected unemployment and illness.
The families and individuals taking time out at the Cabin have all experienced recent traumas and difficulties in their lives and marvel at the relaxing peace that our wonderful Bay has to offer.
They also universally remark upon the kindness of a community prepared to make such a facility available
Special thanks needs to be extended to Gary, Marty and the Apollo Bay Kennett River Public Reserves Committee of Management for getting behind the project and making it possible.
Also this month a local carpet and upholstery cleaner, wishing to remain anonymous, volunteered to keep the inside and outside sparkling, and the roof was resealed against the rain by another kind volunteer. Special thanks also to Alex Yakimov for using so much skill on remodeling the TV cabinet and affixing the sign. Thanks also to Chocolate Gannet for the donation of the large Sony TV and to Beacon Point Accommodation for the great barbeque.
We urgently need a large oil column heater, or twe (that give off a good heat whilst being safe fo children).
Donations are going along steadily with over $3200 r the kitty but we still need $16,800 so we are starting e fund raising campaign.
We are looking for approximately 200 donations of only $80 to secure the future of this project. Donations can be made through the envelopes and box provided at the back of the Anglican Church or directly through to: Anglicare Victoria, P.O. Box 304, Apollo Bay 3233. We will keep you posted each month on how the campaign is progressing.
Can you please help?

Dear friends
of Apollo Bay, Bonjour from Paris. Firstly, belated thanks for all the good wishes and kind messages I received in my last weeks in Apollo Bay. I cannot believe that I have been in Paris over a month but time does fly when you have no responsibilities by choice. 1 have taken things very slowly after all the issues of selling, moving house and quitting work and before I left Australia my brother Ian had a cancer scare just to add to my turmoil. But we have had great news, he is clear of cancer though he will never drink alcohol again!!
Anyway back in Paris the apartment is great and very conveniently located a short walk 15min to Hotel de Ville (town hall) can't seem to get away from some things but this Arrondissement (district) 3rd is very quiet. The apartment is a pre revolutionary minor mansion and I am literally in the old servants quarters at the top of the building, with 75 stairs to keep me honest, but it is very comfortable and well acquittec with everything I need. Most mornings I go to a nearby Cafe for a coffee and croissant (something's don't change) then I going on a walking tour of no fixed agenda but usually down to the River Seine and just to watch the crowd go by. I suppose I am averaging about 5-8km a day.
I have been overwhelmed on more than one visit to the Louvre Musee, between the great works of art and the thousands of people. 1 have been to it on four days each visit about 3 hours but still have not been to all the galleries but I have seen the major items. I have also indulged in some retail therapy and I am glad that I ^m not svelte as it keeps me out of all those trendy boutiques and so it restricts me from too much therapy. I spend most evenings reading histories of France after a visit to the Musee Carnavalet; which is quite close and realised my high school history was not enough. Tomorrow, I have a vague notion of visiting Sainte-Chapelle and Notre Dame on the Isle de Cite or maybe the Impressionists at Musee d'Orsay. Who knows where I will wander or what tomorrow will bring. Adieu Mon Amies Sandra fseskenePhotmail.com)

POLICE REPORT
Between Friday afternoon 02/05/08 and Saturday morning 03/05/08 a person has pulled up 9 eucalypt shrubs in a laneway between Murray Street and Thomson Street Apollo Bay. The plants were about one and a half metres in height and had been planted along a rear fence line of a private property with an intention to form a hedge. A middle aged male person with grey hair was seen acting suspiciously in the lane around 7.00 pm, on 02/05/08 and left driving a white, old model sedan similar to a Corolla. The offender has returned at some stage later and taken the plants. Police are seeking information from any member of the public about the theft or the identity of the male person described.

APOLLO BAY RSL
SUB-BRANCH ANZAC DAY 2008

The Apollo Bay R&SL Sub-branch again wish to pass on to the Community of Apollo Bay and District our appreciation for their generous support of our ANZAC APPEAL with a total amount raised of $3,658.45. We aLso wish to pass on to Foodworks Staff our appreciation for having the ANZAC display and the selling of tokens in their store. Rod Swayn. Appeals Officer.
The Dawn Service at the War Memorial attracted an audience of almost 200. Those present would agree that it was a wonderful moment, especially because of the Welcome speech given by Ron Arnold, on behalf of the Indigenous Families of the district, and also because of the spontaneous rendition of a Welcome song called Innanay, by The Choir of Hard Knocks. The wind prevented the lighting of 90 candles to commemorate 90 years since the battle of Villers-Bretonneux, but the symbolism was still there. Later in the day. with 17yo Piper, Callum Murdoch leading, the March was well received by the hundreds lining the shopping strip. The Mechanics Hall was almost full and later at the Memorial, a huge crowd appreciated the solemnity of the occasion. We also had a large number of people at the BBQ after the march and we thank everyone who contributed to making the day the success it was. Far too many people to list here, but they know we are very grateful. We would like to thank the Music Festival Committee for coordinating with us to make sure there was no interference with our usual ANZAC Day events. Again, thank you Apollo Bay, we are very touched by your support.

OTWAY HEALTH NEWS
Strategic Planning update
We have nearly finished our consultations and have spoken to over a hundred community members representing interest groups, clubs, organisations and many individuals in and around our whole catchment area. We have also consulted with the Department of Human Services, Lome Community Hospital, Barwon Health, Colac Area Health, Colac Otway Shire, and Otway Division of General Practice and our tent at the Apollo Bay Music Festival proved especially helpful in getting feedback form holiday makers.
The feedback we have received has included some really positive ideas and suggestions for future partnerships and service ideas for Otway and Community Health Services, as well as some generous feedback on the work currently being done.
By the end of May we will have finished our consultation program with our community so if you have any feedback you have not yet given us please email it to otwayhealth@swarh.vic.gov.au

Letters to the Editor
Thank you Ted Stuckey for your views on the Golf Club. Great letter, from an interested News sheet reader. (Name and address supplied)

Lavers Hill & District Progress Association Reg.
no. A0019817T
Dear Sir/Madam
Members of the Lavers Hill & District Progress Association are disappointed that the Colac Otway Council continues to pursue its plan to close the current Colac Public Library.
The overwhelming view of the community expressed through submissions, petitions and attendance at "consultation" meetings is that the Colac Public Library should remain at the current central location. This has been ignored by the Council proving that the process of consultation has been little more than a charade. Why has the Council lost touch with the community? Who are they really serving?
It is also surprising that Colac business leaders seem not to appreciate the significance of the centrally located Colac Public Library for people who travel considerable distances to shop in Colac. Families or friends traveling in the one car from the Otways can go their separate ways to shop in Colac and arrange to meet in the Colac Public Library knowing that it is only a short walk from the shopping area. By being able to wait in the library while reading a newspaper or borrowing a book it doesn't really matter whether you have to wait ten minutes,
half an hour or more. To access the new school library will take hours to fit in with the bus timetable. The alternative of each person traveling in separate cars just so they can access a remotely located school library will be impracticable.
Colac will be a less attractive place to shop if the convenient and centrally located public library is closed.
Yours sincerely (C J Harkin)
Secretary of Lavers Hill & District Progress Association

2008 APOLLO BAY MUSIC FESTIVAL
Well the foreshore is back to normal and the committee and others have had a bit of sleep and are quite pleased with the outcome. Now for the debriefs and paperwork needed to finalise the 2008 event. Just a few more thankyous to some wonderful people. From Janice, our accommodation coordinator, thankyou to J C Keane Real Estate, Smythe Real Estate, Great Ocean Rd Real Estate, Robyn at Surfside Backpackers, Pisces Holiday Park and Star of the Sea Convent for all your efforts. And from us to someone who's work gets a lot of attention but he rarely does, Peter Bourne (of Abbott and Coastal Signworks) for all the colourful and artistic work he does with our billboards and other signage. Thanks Pete. A. Tibbits Hon. Secretary ABMF Inc 2008 Young Songwriters/ Performers Competition
Elevation of the competition to prime time Friday afternoon on the street stage resulted in a healthy crowd spilling onto the street to witness yet another competition stacked with amazing talent. The 13 performers were a mix of solo vocalists, duos and rock bands. With the winners of the Young Performer's Competition Geelong's Tom Milekovic and Bridget McLennan' described as prodigious talents and similarly NSW's 'Caitlin Harnett', winner of the Young Songwriter's demonstrated an extraordinary songwriting and vocal talent. However it was the local performers who drew the largest and most enthusiastic response from the crowd. 'Vacuous Rapture' (yes-that's their name?!) making their public debut, blew the crowd away with Miles Sharpies on vocals and Tom Learey and Will Eyers thrashing their guitars (much to their adoring parents and girlfriend's glee). Oscar Lalor, at the age of 14, proved what an amazing talent he is on the guitar, leaving MC Dallas Frasca speechless. Whilst Bells n Tosca (aka Ella Bourne and Madeline Deppeler) scored themselves an award and some cash for their heartfelt acoustic duet. The level of talent in this competition continues to increase each year and this year was no exception. For all the young musos out there start practising for 2009. Who knows? - You could be the next big thing.
