The spirit of Apollo Bay celebrated at
the 16th Music Festival
The overwhelming vibe and feedback from audience
members, media and artists was "What a great
town and community thrives in Apolio Bay".
The Committee, although exhausted, and still busily
working away on the festival wash up, are thrilled
that this year's event was what they had hoped it
would be, and that was a true celebration of our
community and a showcase of musical excellence,
set in our own stunning environment. There are so
many highlights, from the opening ceremony featuring
the Community Choir who did the town so proud, to
the magnificent parade and fireworks. The festival
was a true forum for friendships. Our choir working
with the inspirational Choir Of Hard Knocks, and
so many of our local musos forging friendships with
the visiting talent.
The visiting artists were so impressed with the
enthusiasm of our 'friends of the festival' and
all of the volunteers. So, a huge heartfelt thanks
to everyone who put in so much work leading up to
and during the festival. On this note we truly want
to thank Jill Spencer for organising all of the
volunteers and so much more, she put in a lion hearted
effort leading up to the festival, and then hit
full throttle being a permanent fixture in the ticket
tent for the whole weekend. Similarly Janice Haynes
was locked down in the bunker of the Surf Club for
the whole festival, ensuring that all artists were
welcomed and organised to precision - she did an
incredible job.
We believe that overall the street closure was a
big success, the survey feedback we got was extremely
positive, and we have also had some terrific emails
about it too. As one very happy fellow remarked
"the integration between the Festival and the
town is fantastic, I feel totally at home".
The Committee would like to thank the traders and
business owners of the town as we understand how
much of a mixed blessing this event is for them.
We also hope that they were thinking of ways to
enhance and take full advantage of this weekend
in the future. The promotion of Apollo Bay and the
festival, through the media over the past three
weeks, has been a huge success.

thankyou must also go out to our merchandise
co-ordinator Gail O'Leary and her team,
food village coordinator Angelika Millar,
the feedback from the vendors and patrons
was little short of rapturous. Joker Courts
for keeping the lights and generators fuelled,
Craig Buckingham and John Van Someren (who
was always on time) who made sure the ticketing
went smoothly. There is no way this festival
could have been so successful without the
Herculean effort of the ticket tent helpers,
they weathered the storm and came up smiling
every time. Unflappable,
courteous and friendly they really were
invaluable ambassadors of the festival and
the town. We are proud that we had such
a diverse mix of extraordinary talent over
the weekend, from Vince Jones, to Sara Storer,
Joe Camilleri to the Whitlams, Kate Miller-Heidke
to Dog Trumpet, too many to name, and we
are thrilled that the local acts received
such fantastic responses. Thanks again to
everyone who was a part of the festival,
and for making all of the visitors feel
so warmly welcome across the board.

Music Festival and the Choir of Hard Knocks
"Awesome, inspiring, emotional".
Just some of th< comments from the audience
at the Choir of Hard Knocks concert on Friday
evening. An estimated crowd of 2000 packed
the ABC tent for what many in the choir
rated as their best performance ever. Brilliantly
organised and lead by Jonathon Welch they
had the house rocking. The musical numbers
were interspersed with individual stories
of hope and optimism in the face of despair.
Little wonder then that several patrons
considered this concert alone was worth
the price of their Festival ticket. On Thursday
evening the Apollo Bay Community Choir were
privileged to be involved in a combined
workshop with the Choir of Hard Knocks.
The interaction between the groups was exceptional
as they shared their love of music by singing
and learning songs together
Congratulations to the Music Festival Committee
for their foresight and perseverance in
organising the Choir of Hard Knocks to perform
in Apollo Bay. And to the local volunteers
who helped in so many ways make their visit
so memorable. The whole experience did everyone
proud. Ken and Lilly Makings (Editors 1

ABP12C Parents 4 Friends
gr o u p
The Anzac week end was certainly busy for
many families... Friday morning the RSL conducted
a dawn service for the first time, the service
was well attended. I went along for the first
time and was moved to see students from the
school attending. The school last Wednesday
morning involved the RSL with a Remembrance
Day ceremony. Students have been learning
about Galiipoli and Australia's involvement
in conflict in the years since then. This
helps build an appreciation of the contributions
of Australian men and women to maintaining
the principles of freedom and democracy. The
choir opened the morning assembly, and many
have said how well they are singing. This
was evident on Saturday morning, when students
performed at the Music Festival; they received
a very warm welcome, and their singing was
better than ever. You can see their confidents
growing at every performance, and boys it
is great to hear and see you in the school
choir. Talking about Choir's; Sunday morning
I listened to the performance of the Apollo
Bay Community Choir, awesome! And again how
wonderful to see students, teachers and a
cross section of our community singing together;
everyone looked like they where loving the
experience, big smiles and a great levelling
out for the community...
Thankyou.....
A big thank you to Adrian Marriner For doing
a fantastic job of constructing and finishing
off the base of our new playground. We all
really appreciate your hard work and the time
you have taken off from your work to help
the school achieve a much needed play ground.
Another BIG Thank You to Jade, we all love
our school Choir and really admire your dedication.
Thanks for giving our children a wonderful
opportunity to sing in a group & in public.
The Parent's and Friends Group also took to
the street and raised $740.10 at the Music
Festival on Saturday. Thanks to the Lions
club for the spinning wheel, Janine McKenzie
for picking it up and dropping it off. The
Nolle family for donating 4 X cooked Crayfish
& yummy Olive oil presented beautifully
on ice and labelled. The girls for selling
tickets Suzie, Mich, Alison, Marion, Kim,
Linda & Liz Hanger for support Thanks
for all your help, it is always appreciated.
Thanks to Otway Health and our school Nurse
Kim for her hard work over the music Festival
week end, the skating demo's, chill out tent
and the educational programs on teenage drinking
etc prior to this event is really important
at helping keeping our children well informed
and safer. We could keep on going with the
'thanks' for our community has so many generous
people that give heaps, "thanks heaps!
to all of you"...
Monday May the 5 is our next Parents and Friends
meeting we are meeting at the Great Ocean
Hotel for a bar meal, drink and going over
our next agenda, we will start at 7pm. Come
along and join in, we would love to see you
there. It is bring a friend night. Well that
is it for me this week; look forward to seeing
a few new faces Monday night

Hello
to all our Members & the Apollo Bay Community!
We trust 2008 is emerging as a good
one for all. The purpose of this newsletter
is to inform you of what's been happening-at
the Youth Club over recent months. We would
really like to hear what our members and users
of our Hall would like to see happening at
and with our Community Youth Club. Ideas anyone?
We are also looking for some volunteer assistance
and we are keen to hear what our members are
willing to be involved with. Please fill out
the following pages indicating when, where
and how you are prepared to volunteer your
time or that of your organisation.
We'd also like to take this opportunity to
thank Bob Telford for all his usual willing
assistance and guardianship of the Youth Club,
he's hanging up the bookings hat for now to
focus on his health. We wish him well and
look forward to his return to good heath!
Max Gulloch can still be contacted to book
the hall and Trindi Suratman can also be contacted
for bookings on 52376605.
Many hands make light work...
Fundraising is an important aspect of any
community group. Currently the Youth Club
derives- its main income from hire of the
hall, equipment and amenities. Other volunteer
based fundraising supplements this income.
Events such as Otway Odyssey lunches, 75Th
Anniversary of the Great Ocean Road sausage
sizzle and Christmas Carols are examples of
fundraising efforts that go a long way to
provide the extra funds needed to keep the
hall going and to raise the Youth Club's profile
in the community. We rely on our membership
to volunteer assistance for events such as
these to keep our Community Hall afloat.
Celebrate the opening of our bank
You are invited to join us to celebrate
the opening of Apollo Bay & District Community
Bank', Branch with competitions and giveaways
for the kids.

Storage Shed
The storage shed at the rear of the hall has
been largely completed. It has already been
put into full use by allowing the kitchen
to be completely stripped out as the first
phase of the kitchens renovation. Once the
kitchen is complete the reorganisation of
the club's assets can be undertaken and the
shed organised with long term objectives in
mind.
Hopefully we will end up with a spare bay
(there are 3 roller doors across the front
of the shed) that could be rented out to another
community group. The Music Festival has already
expressed possible interest in this storage
space.
Kitchen
The renovation of the kitchen is moving ahead;
as noted above it has been stripped out. The
stud wall frame has been reinforced and repaired
and shortly the walls will be reclad.
There is preliminary interest from both the
Shire and Otway Health & Community Services
for our kitchen to become the Apollo Bay Community
Kitchen. Hopefully this will come to fruition
and result in funding from both those organisations
that will make our renovations even better.

Chill Out Tent
at the Apollo Bay Music Festival
This year Otway Health was pleased to work with
Colac Area Health and FreeZa to provide a chill-out
tent for youth attending the Apollo Bay Music Festival.
The tent was designed to provide a safe and friendly
place for kids to go if they felt that they needed
a bit of time-out from the festival, particularly
if they had been consuming alcohol or other drugs.
The tent was well-used by a range of kids, both
local and visitors, and was a great resource for
the festival. Thanks to all those who helped out
or just popped in to say hello.
Community Choir Knocking on Heavens Door
Choir of Hard Knocks
On Thursday night the Choir of Hard Knocks (who
were headlining the festival) and our own community
choir met at the Senior Citizens Centre for a good
old fashioned sing along. After a joint warm up
led by the members of the Hard Knocks team, both
choirs got down to business and sang their hearts
out. Judging by the rapturous applause the Hard
Knocks Choir gave they were very impressed with
our abilities and we were obviously highly impressed
with theirs. Some good foundations were laid for
future collaboration and some close friendships
were formed into the bargain.

Dear Editor
GOOD LUCK TO THE GOLF CLUB
Like most residents of Apollo Bay I have always
supported the Apollo Bay Golf Club's quest for an
18-hole golf course. I just don't think that it
should be built on the floodplain. I wish the club
the best of luck in their new venture.
As I see it the club will probably be the first
to learn how to play golf underwater and I would
like to offer some suggestions. Although the water
hazards are already well defined it may be difficult
to avoid the traps hidden beneath the surface. The
fairways, which will be relatively flat, even in
the places that were once higher ground, should
be clearly defined with white poles marked to indicate
the depth of the water at the point. A SatNav program
should be prepared that shows the layout of each
fairway and the location of the hole it should also
help players find the next tee. Each cup should
transmit a distinct homing signal. Players found
using the cup signal to guide the flight of their
ball should incur a 4-stroke penalty. On the 4th
and 8th fairways, in what will be known as Garrett's
Gulch, players who slice or hook their shots will
benefit from having their shot deflected back onto
the fairway by the 13 meter high retaining walls
on each side.
Regular players should learn how to walk on water
and acquire an amphibious golf buggy and waterproof
scorecards. Dress codes should allow players to
wear wetsuits, bathers or bikinis but ban the use
of flippers. Special frilly pink waders for the
ladies and smart brown and orange-stripped waders
for the men should be available for hire. During
major tournaments arrangements should also be made
for lifesavers to be posted at the 3rd and 10th
greens. As a leader in underwater play the club
will have a great opportunity to develop and patent
a large number of aids. Items such as a floating
self-levelling tees, self-adjusting stilts and golf
balls with radio transmitters to help players locate
their balls should be developed. A new hover golf
cart capable of moving over both land and water
would also be winner.
The club could also introduce a new "Tween
Tides" tournament, where players hit off when
the tide recedes far enough to expose the first
fairway and must complete the round before the next
full tide. Sadly only a few of the members who started
the game will be around to finish the 18-hole course.
Ted Stuckey
Hello to you all,
Just returned from my 8th festival and what a beauty
it
was: we have always wondered why the street was
never closed off but well done as it created a true
street festival atmosphere and the new street stage
was a winner. We hope the street closure will remain.
The new bar set ups in the 2 larger marquees was
very smart as well as increasing exits from the
marquees at the end of big concerts.
The calibre of the music was good as it has been
for
the last few years.
Looking forward to next year already!!

Hi,
I've just returned to Melbourne with my
daughters after spending Friday and Saturday at
our
first Apollo Bay Music Festival - congratulations
on an
absolutely fantastic event. Of course, we now intend
to become regulars.
Thanks for all your hard work. The only negative
experience for the whole weekend was the ticket
/
registration process.

Dear Apollo Bay Festival Folks,
I brought a friend of mine who was visiting from
London to your festival this weekend and thought
I
would write to tell you what a fantastic time we
had.
Unfortunately we had to return to Melbourne on
Saturday so Michelle could catch her next flight
and
missed the rest of the festival, but we wish you
well
for the remainder of this one and I look forward
to
coming down next year!

Dear Editor
Music Festival
Congratulations to the hard working team involved
on the presentation of another great Music Festival
which certainly ranked with the best of the past.
Well done! The variety and standard of the acts
was a credit to the selection committee. There was
an interesting diversity of foods and the lighter
larger tents were more user friendly for the patrons.
One great improvement, which it is hoped will become
a permanent feature, was the street closure for
the duration of the Festival which with the exclusion
of cars lent a real carnival atmosphere to the week-end
and presented a better facility for the interesting
band of buskers. My only recurrent criticism, once
again, was the volume pumped out by the sound "technicians?"
which sadly in the case of so many of the vocalists,
distorted their words to the point where they were
unintelligible. Sara Storer, who opened the Festival,
and who obviously had a message in her songs was
incomprehensible, as was the case with so many others.
But once again team - Well Done!
Allen Hokin
Music Festival Feedback
Hello,
My friends and I enjoyed the Festival very much
in
general. Your volunteers and organisers did a
fantastic job, but thought you might like some
feedback
1 The Choir of Hard Knocks was by far the Festival
Highlight: such an inspiration.
2 The acoustics for most of the shows were of a
very poor standard and even the artists seemed to
find it frustrating and had to ask for adjustments
during their shows
3 Changes to the program were not notified to patrons.
4 There should not be a bar in the main marquees
5 Our expectations for the Festival was a Family
Friendly event as in previous years not a Night
Club venue!
Peter Norton
ABMF
CONGRATULATIONS and THANKYOU to the
committee on a wonderful festival for 2008. It really
was absolutely fantastic. I thought both the
community stage, and blocking off the street to
traffic
was a brilliant move. Just some feedback that there
was some interference between the main marquee
and the community stage, so perhaps they need to
be
just a little further apart?
I hope you are all feeling very proud - you should
be!
Elizabeth Gore
Dear Editor
RE: PASCOE & MOORE ST CORNER
The COS design for the new traffic control kerbing
to be installed at the corner of Pascoe & Moore
Street in Apollo Bay demonstrates a total lack of
understanding of existing traffic movements. The
kerbing will restrict the road width in both streets
to approximately 5.4 meters. The width is barely
adequate for cars but will make it impossible for
the CFA fire appliances, the large tourist buses
and the semi trailer trucks delivering goods to
the pub, the shops etc, which are up to 2.4m in
width, to turn either into or out of Moore Street.
The council traffic plans use Pascoe Street as an
alternative route to the Great Ocean Road. It was
used for that purpose from 25th to 27th April during
the Music Festival. The proposed narrow crossing
at the corner of Pascoe and Moore Streets will become
a major bottleneck in the use of the road for this
purpose. I suggest that the council officers return
to the drawing board and design a crossing that
will assist rather than hinder the traffic flow.
Ted Stuckey
Dear Editor,
Congratulations to the current Apollo Bay Music
Festival Committee on their mammoth efforts to stage
such a wonderful 16th festival. Beginning at an
unprecedented difficult time, they were forced to
work a lot out for themselves. This voluntary Committee
- Pete, David, Anton, Chris, Robyn & Andy -
has worked incredibly hard to make this wonderful
weekend possible & successful. Well done Michelle
Filmore, too, for her efforts in revitalizing the
community choir and for persevering to secure the
Choir of Hard Knocks whose concert was just fantastic.
It seems Jill Spencer once again threw herself in
to help with everything! It was a great weekend
and there was a real community feel about the event
- well done to you all and thank you ! Jane Gross
