MUSIC FESTIVAL. 20-22 April.
The festival that has something for everyone has more to offer the over 25s this year. Jazz, classical, world and folk music are big on the 2007 bill. Usually they will play in smaller venues that give the audience a more intimate experience.
If you sat all day Saturday at the Bowls Club you would see the gypsy violins of Tzigas; world music by Babylon Bicycle and Blackwood; the bluegrass sounds of Dev'lish Mary; jazz by The Fallingwater Trio, Yggdrasil and Misinterprotato; the folk and grooves of Loren; and the unbelievable voice and sounds of Mihirangi, here for an encore performance following her sensational debut at last year's festival.
Although the Catholic Church can seat a large crowd, it retains a cosy feel. Its acoustics are superb and the natural light streaming through the stained glass windows gives the space extra warmth. It's an ideal venue for the classical compositions of Rae Howell of the Sunwrae Ensemble, who has written pieces specifically for the festival. The Silo String Quartet also plays at the church, as do folk guitarist David Ross Macdonald and singer-songwriter Chloe Hall, who appears with James Hazeldon.
Iluka Cafe supports a brace of solo acts, including blues ace Lloyd Spiegel, young troubadour Brendan Welch, big sound dynamo Juzzie Smith and Justin Carter, last year's winner of the young songwriter's competition. Reverb-heavy guitarist Ben Rogers and country stylist David Holmes front trios on the Iluka bill.
Local line-ups play all Saturday the Surf Club. James Butt, TJ Vox, Counterfit. M2W3, Jasupa, Spyndrift, Crossfire and the Ziggi Trio are some of the acts to be seen at the venue with the best view of them all.
If big venues and loud music are not your scene, the festival provides plenty of world-class acts in venues that keep it calm and cool.
