Asthma Management
in the Bushfire Season
On many occasions in the past month Apollo Bay and
District has been shrouded in smoke from bushfires.
Bushfire smoke is known to exacerbate asthma and
other|
respiratory symptoms in people with a chronic respiratory
condition and the potential risk to health should
not be
underestimated.
Tips for Bushfire Asthma Management:
• If you live in a fire danger area, or are
likely to be visiting one, discuss the dangers with
your local GP and update your personal asthma action
plan accordingly.
• Volunteer fire-fighters with asthma, who
are likely to have prolonged intensive exposure
to fire, heat and smoke, should have appropriate
personal asthma action plans updated with their
GP.
• Always ensure you have plenty of medication
on hand, particularly reliever medication.
• On days of total fire ban or high fire days,
listen to your local radio station for localised
fire danger updates and reports.
• If you plan to evacuate, always carry your
inhaler with you.
• When smoke is in the air, but a fire is
not directly threatening you, stay indoors and if
possible use a filtered air conditioner to circulate
air.
For enquiries regarding the health effects of the
current bushfire smoke contact Nurse on Call on
1300 60 60 24.
If you have any questions or concerns about managing
your asthma or any chronic condition support is
also available from Otway Health Asthma Clinic.

Letters
to the Editor

"To the
Editor,
I would just like to congratulate the Greens candidates
in the Polwarth and Western District voting regions
on their recent achievements. Ms Natalie Atherden
(Polwarth LA candidate) polled 9.61% of the primary
vote while gaining 19.37% and 20.54% of the vote
at Apollo Bay and Lavers Hill respectively. Mr Marcus
Ward polled 8.3% of the primary vote in the Western
District voting region. Although neither candidate
was elected, their results are a great achievement
and reflect the growing importance of environmental
and social justice concerns in this area. Well done
to both candidates, and well done to those who made
a statement by voting Greens No 1.
Kate Holmes, HordernVale"
Do we only have State premiers to defend us against
Mr Howard's nuclear mania? Victoria's Premier Mr
Bracks says ' No1 not in this town" - but what
do the others say? 2007 is Australia's year of the
nuclear knife edge.

INSIDE SLEDGE ABCC REPORT
Congratulations to Allan McSparron, the lucky winner
of the 3 Day Ashes tickets raffled by the Apollo
Bay Cricket Club. As you may, or may not know, the
3rd Day was the final day, as the Aussies again
marched to victory. As per usual the ABCC knows
how to look after their raffle winners.
Training starts back tonight (Thursday 4th January)
at 5:30pm down at the nets. There is no cricket
this weekend. But there is a district game, Melbourne
V St Kilda, on at Warrion if you want to go and
watch. |

GO BAY!!!
-Expressions of Interest - Community
Representative
Skenes Creek to Marengo Coastal Action Plan Implementation
Committee
The Western Coastal Board, Colac Otway Shire Council
and Apollo Bay-Kennett River Public Reserves Committee
of Management are establishing a committee of key
stakeholders to drive the implementation of the
Skenes Creek to Marengo Coastal Action Plan (CAP).
The Implementation Committee will be responsible
for developing an Implementation Plan, reviewing
progress and seeking funding to implement actions
in the CAP. We are currently seeking a community
representative to participate on the Committee.
The CAP was produced under the Coastal Management
Act 1995. It was launched in 2002 to implement the
Victorian Coastal Strategy and address the range
of coastal management issues between Skenes Creek
and Marengo. The CAP received significant input
from local and regional stakeholders, and is one
of 10 CAPs in the western coastal region.
Expressions of Interest should include detail on
your interest / expertise in coastal issues. The
closing date is Wednesday 31st January 2007 and
applications should be sent to: Steve Blackley,
Executive Officer, Western Coastal Board, PO Box
103 Geelong VIC 3220, Or preferably by email to:
steve.blackley@dse.vic.gov.au. Further details on
the role of the WCB can be found at www.wcb.vic.gov.au
The first meeting of the Implementation Committee
is proposed for late February 2007. Please direct
inquiries to Steve Blackley on 5226 4925 or Gary
